Lebensreform, what is it? The Lebensreform in the German speaking countries was developed during the industrial revolution during the end of the 19th century. It was a movement against this industrialization. The aim of the movement was not a revolution but a reform in the daily life. The aim was natural living, vegetarian diet, naturopathic medicine, naked body culture and living outside the cities. It was important to live natural and to be different from the mainstream of society, because they thought that the mainstream of the society was harmed by the industrialization. Many people in the mainstream, went into the cities. The population of Berlin between 1850 to 1910 increased fivefold. In the rapidly built houses for workers (speculative properties that were traded in shares) there was a housing misery of unimaginable proportions. Many who lived there had tuberculosis, rachitis or were addicted to alcohol. This situation motivated the sick people to paradisiacal nudity in nature: nude bathing, nude dancing, nude gymnastics. An important teacher of the Lebensreform was the artist Diefenbach who live as a naturist close to Munich. Many of his students have made naturism more popular.
