When I was a student nurse too many years back now that I care to remember without wondering where time is going, I digress, I was in charge of an outpatient clinic in a busy hospital. When I say in charge, I was responsible for calling people from the waiting room to see the doctor - what could possibly go wrong?? Now the waiting room was divided in two, one clinic on the left, the other on the right. Ears Nose and throat on one side and the rectal clinic on the other. Those with problems in the lower regions sat on the right while those on the left knew what might be wrong with them as they looked across, for the sake of clarity I called it the coughers on the left and the folk with piles on the right. We move on. The doctor I was shadowing was abrupt, curt, and pretty ignorant, He never really looked at me or any patient who had the privilege of attending to see him. I was rostered to the rectal clinic mostly as his chaperone for when he examined his patients . Out I pop, spring in my step and call in Mr B. Mr B please to Room 2 Mr B? What I didnt know was that there were two Mr Bs on that day, and the other one was in the toilet when I came out so only 1 ventured forward and in he pops in to see the doctor. Can you take off your pants please and lie on your left side knees up toward your chin the doctor requested in haste. Mr B looking somewhat unsure of himself reluctantly agreed. I handed the doctor his gloves and off he went behind the curtain to perform an essential examination that most lower Gastrointestinal doctors need to do. How are you affected with your symptoms he asked the patient ? Do you strain at stool? How often do you go? We need to check you for polyps said the doctor eagerly, we will need more tests arranged Mr B speaking very quietly replied - I have these nasal polyps but am surprised you can reach them from down there? The penny dropped - wrong man in the wrong clinic . And who do you think got blamed? Dizzy nursing student Jenn Dont drop your pants if you have a sore throat ! JennS44.
