Modesty is about humility, self-control, and inward righteousness rather than external appearance. Biblical Evidence that Nudity is Not Immodesty Creation Narrative (Genesis 2:25): In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve were both naked and were not ashamed (Genesis 2:25). This passage implies that nudity, in its original, uncorrupted state, was not associated with shame or immodesty. It was only after the Fall, when sin entered the world, that they felt shame and covered themselves with fig leaves because of the shame of their sins not their nude skins. (Genesis 3:7). Prophetic Symbolism (Isaiah 20:2-3): The prophet Isaiah walked naked and barefoot for three years as a sign and symbol against Egypt and Cush. This action, commanded by GOD, served as a prophetic act rather than an immoral or immodest display. It illustrates that nudity had a purpose. David's Worship (2 Samuel 6:14, 20-22): King David danced with all his might before the LORD while wearing a linen ephod, a garment that was minimally covering. His wife Michal criticized him for his perceived immodesty, but David defended his actions, implying that his state of dress was irrelevant compared to his heart's posture of worship. JESUS and the Cross (Matthew 27:28, 35): During the crucifixion, JESUS was stripped of His garments. This public exposure did not detract from His dignity or holiness. This demonstrates that nudity even in suffering, does not equate to immodesty. Modesty as a Matter of the Heart Biblically, modesty appears to be an issue of the heart's intentions and attitudes rather than one's state of dress. 1 Timothy 2:9-10: Paul advises women to dress modestly, but his emphasis is on avoiding excessive adornment and focusing on good works. Modesty is about humility, self-control, and inward righteousness rather than external appearance. 1 Peter 3:3-4: Peter echoes this sentiment, advising that true beauty should come from the hidden person of the heart and the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in GOD' sight. Again, modesty is seen as an inward quality. Webster's 1828 Dictionary Definition of Modesty: The 1828 edition of Websters Dictionary defines modesty as: MOD'ESTY, noun: That lowly temper which accompanies a moderate estimate of one's own worth and importance. In females, modesty has the same character as in men, and is naturally expected to be more manifest in females. Modesty in a woman implies a virtuous delicacy which avoids anything impure and tends to maintain her own dignity. That modesty which consists in purity of thought and manners, a delicacy which avoids all indelicate expressions and actions. From this definition, it is clear that modesty concerns a person's humility, self-perception, and purity of thought and behavior rather than the clothing they wear. The emphasis is on maintaining dignity and virtue, avoiding impurity and indelicacy, which are inward qualities manifesting in outward behavior.
