Nudism In Japan

In Japan, nudism as it exists in the West isnt really the same thing, but public baths, such as sento, can be found all over the city, and hot springs are located throughout the country. In the public bath, being naked is normal, and you dont wear swimsuits or anything. I remember feeling very embarrassed as a child to be naked in front of my friends during school trips where we stayed at inns, but that feeling gradually faded as I became an adult. When I visited a nudist village in Canada, it felt similar to Japanese bathing facilities but with a slightly different nuance. First of all, in Japan, mixed-gender bathing is a thing of the distant past, and its very rare nowadays. There are rumors that such places still exist deep in the mountains, though. In Canada, however, people were naked not just in the bath but in other places too - like in restaurants or other communal areas. In Japan, you wear clothes everywhere except in the bath at bathing facilities. Living naked, like strolling through a natural landscape or watching TV in a lounge while nude, just doesnt happen in Japan. In fact, the word nudism itself might be difficult to express in its true sense in Japanese. The words nudist and nudism are sometimes used as-is when speaking in Japanese, but they feel a bit off. They carry a strong sense of ideology. So, personally, I feel that saying I like being naked makes more sense. This translation should capture the nuances I intended to convey.
