We have to tip our hat and congratulate the proponents behind the campaign to keep Sunnyside Beach North a clothing optional beach, and even more so as the outcome will include an improved experience for all. As somebody who lives in QLD it has been an interesting matter to watch and observe, for as many of you know QLD has no clothing optional beaches; and some of us are more than interested in getting a beach here 'made legal for nude bathing'. The opposition to a clothing optional beach here in QLD is deep and wide. But in its simplest form it is ostensibly about the deep concern that nudity in a public space leads to inappropriate sexual behaviour at same said location. Yes there are many other issues raised and discussed by the 'NO' camp, but it is this issue alone that stymies any real attempt to progress the discussion. Its a moral battle ground. I note that this was in fact an issue at Sunnyside too; and part of the way forward is to reduce vegetation surrounding the beach to reduce the risk of inappropriate sexual behaviour. At this point it is really important to note that local residents who responded to the survey were a lower percentage of the overall respondents, but the vast majority of local residents said 'NO'. And belying their response was this concern. I can't say I can blame them for this concern, because my observation as a nudist and walking to/from the car park when attending legal clothing optional beaches in NSW is that this very activity does indeed take place in the dunes and behind the bushes! But there is also the issue that although 90% of respondents supported a clothing optional beach, none of them actually lived in the area. Whilst we can talk that up re local economics etc (localised spending by those who travel to said location), and it may have been enough to sway a favourable decision in Victoria, elsewhere its IMHO unlikely to stack up. My concern here is that the survey and process at Sunnyside in Victoria's Mornington Peninsula may be a 'win' there but it will actually provide 'grist for the mill' for the NO Camp here in QLD. We may very well need an entirely different strategy here in QLD!
