Ah, the noble art of nursing a job that is unquestionably the pinnacle of glamour, excitement, and fortune. Who wouldnt want to spend their days in a sanitized world of spotless uniforms, constant praise, and endless financial rewards? Lets take a moment to appreciate why being a nurse is, without a doubt, the ultimate farce of a profession. 1. The Glorified Waiter with a Stethoscope When you picture a nurse, what comes to mind? Someone whos juggling life-saving decisions, guiding patients through the labyrinth of medical procedures, and acting as a superhero in scrubs, right? Wrong. Nurses are really just glorified waiters, except instead of taking your food order, theyre taking your vital signs every 30 minutes, all while balancing a tray of medications, changing bedsheets, and wondering if theyll have time to wee before their shift ends. Oh, and theres no tip at the endjust the expectation that you will make it through the day without collapsing from exhaustion. 2. The Magic of Just Nursing Nurses get to do all the fun stuff like giving injections, monitoring heart rates, and dressing wounds. But dont be fooled by their impressive titlesRegistered Nurse or Charge Nurseits really just a code for person who will fix your IV line and also probably your broken heart given half a chance . If youre lucky, youll get a good job or a good girl at the end of the day. When was the last time anyone mentioned that you helped prevent an outbreak or saved someone from dying in the middle of the night? Oh, right. Thats just part of the job. 3. The Infinite To-Do List No one can keep up with the endless to-do list that comes with nursing. And who needs personal time anyway? Nurses live by the principle that free time is just a myth perpetuated by people who have never had to catch up on their charting after an 14 hour shift. Youll never hear a nurse say, Im so bored, theres nothing to do! Its more like, I have 32 tasks on my list and two hours to do them. Can I finish without falling asleep in the broom cupboard? ? Spoiler alert: You cant. 4. Superhuman Powers Not Included Despite what you might believe, nurses dont have superhuman healing powers. They cant magically make someones symptoms disappear with a few soothing words and a nice cup of tea (though, a cup of tea is indeed part of the recovery process, right?). Nurses are somehow expected to not only be medical professionals but also therapists, counsellors, psychologists, and people who have an uncanny ability to smile through exhaustion. Patient in Room 3 needs emotional support. Translation: Please pretend you havent just been up for 12 hours and are questioning all of your life choices. 5. The Perks of Disappointment Oh, and lets not forget the many perks of nursing. You get to witness the profound gratitude of patients who genuinely believe youre their personal servant. Ive been waiting for this pain medication for five minutes, where have you been? Or the delightful moments when a doctor asks you for the fifth time where a particular piece of equipment is, as if you have a magical inventory of every hospital supply tucked down your top. As if anyone would ever get an appreciative Thank you for saving my life card from management dont even think about it. So, if youre considering nursing as a career, rest assuredyoull get the opportunity to sacrifice your body, your time, and any semblance of personal privacy all while being perpetually under-appreciated. But hey, at least you can wear scrubs every day. Nothing says professional like wearing pajamas to work. Yes - Ive had one of those days ! JennS44. X
