A pound of water weighs the same as a pound of ice, melt the pound of ice and it still weighs a pound. Since water expands some when frozen it displaces more VOLUME and is the reason ice floats. This is why water pipes burst when they get frozen solid, it is due to the water expanding when it becomes frozen.
