span class="msgtxt"When becoming a member on any social networking site like this you're required to read and agree to the site's terms of service (TOS), rules or other guidelines. These are mostly to protect the site itself. But some do help to protect the users from each other in the form of harassing behavior. However the rules and guidelines of sites do very little to help with the goal of interacting with other users.
We're all left to fend for ourselves and stumble along to try to connect with other users. Along the way it even appears that, in the absence of any real rules and guidance, some users have made up their own rules that only they know but others are expected to follow. This makes the task of trying to connect with others that much more difficult and frustrating.
Wouldn't it be great if the online community came together and decided on some rules and guidelines for interaction? No one could enforce the rules of course, but if everyone at least understood what was expected it would make things go smoother. Some rules could be as simple as the basic social etiquette rules we learned as children like treat others as you would like to be treated. Others would mirror some of the unwritten but widely observed social norms that we exercise in the real world when meeting someone for the first time like simple questions and answers to get to know a person first before getting into more personal and private information. Others are unique situations that only seem to exist online but are still similar to real world situations like when and how is someone your "friend".
In one or two short sentences each (NOT whole paragraphs), what are some rules or guidelines that would improve online etiquette to make social networking easier for whatever goal is appropriate for this or any other site?/span

If the site has standard questions as part of users' profiles, truthfully answer ALL the applicable questions. Leaving questions blank suggests you're hiding something and deminishes trust from the beginning.
Don't ask for (or give) private phone numbers or email addresses until both parties express an interest in connecting outside of the site. No providing this information to strangers is why most users sign on to such sites in the first place.ReactReply - PH
