I have actually worn this in a hotel., including in the hall talking to housekeepers and inside with room service deliveries. They never acted like it was anything out of the ordinary.

I've got a couple of pouch-only suits but have never worn them out - I should give them a run. A couple of very-strappy strings have had the occasional wear on quiet beaches. I wouldn't dare in a hotel corridor!

I think you should go for it! Here is a pic in the hotel hallway.
After trying several minimal things in various places, I began designing what I thought would fit the occasion. The one thing I found most comfortable was a short wrap. After several models, this is the one I like best. Standing or walking, everything is covered, just barely. I use it to carry the trash to the street curb and have even walked around the block at dawn wearing only it. Two early risers saw me clearly and just watched as I walked by. It's not illegal to wear it out, just highly bold! With just a tug, it falls apart to be folded and carried in one hand. My first one had more coverage. But I wanted to be more bold, and I wanted to show as much skin as possible and still be covered if I was approached. On this one, I widened the opening on the sides more. Standing still or walking, I am completely covered. The material is heavy enough so the breeze won't blow it up. Another thing I realized was needed for hiking and while working was a pocket for keys, etc., so I made the front flap a pocket. This would work well for transitioning to and from the camping area or beach. The cool air rushing beneath and the freedom of the equipment to be accessible to swing unencumbered feels excellent. I also found it stimulating as my penis rubbed against my pocket with the key ring of 12+ keys bouncing back and forth as I walked!! It also works well to wear a shirt that stops at the belt, letting most of the wrap shown below; it is excellent for mowing while the nosy neighbors peek. I will also attest that you will not be covered when hard, giving a bit more of a challenge to wearing it in public.
I saw someone wearing something similar on the path to Gunnison. He said he made it by cutting the bottom off an old t-shirt and running a piece of elastic through the hem. He then removed as much on the sides as he thought he could. While he was covered standing and walking, when he got out of his car while I was sitting in mine, I could see everything!

If anyone is looking for an extreme example of barely enough, try this.

They're quite secure. I have two. Both have an elasticated edge. The first ( https://www.koalaswim.com/foreskin-pouch ) has an outer elasticised strap that secures with a choice of three Velcro tab positions while the second (also Koala but discontinued) has a couple of tie strings that are tethered at the bottom on the inside and emerge at the top through two eyelets so a bow can be tied at the top.

As typical for Koala, it's not just about being secure but also making sure everything is presented as impressively as possible by helping to push everything outwards. Edit: a little poking around in the Wayback Machine yielded an image of the second suit, the Man Journey MJ9224: http://web.archive.org/web/20101124153325im_/http://koalaswim.com/images/Man_Journey_Pouch_Suit_02.jpg

This Koala one goes close in the barely-covered stakes and has been worn on a suburban beach on a quiet day and through the full Sunnyside carpark on the way to the clothing-optional zone. Once again, the pictures are the original website ones: https://web.archive.org/web/20070130165843im_/http://www.koalaswim.com/images/Undeniable-01-l.jpg https://web.archive.org/web/20041124172355im_/http://www.koalaswim.com/images/Undeniable-04-l.jpg https://web.archive.org/web/20050108084426im_/http://www.koalaswim.com/images/Undeniable-02-l.jpg The blurb from the website:UndeniableU7918 $29.00Hot orange thong with v-drop front narrow pouch and real tie sides. Undeniable is the essence of California Bikini Design. A real beach suit that you can untie to get the very best tan with striking good looks to show off in.

For those of you who wear these minimal swimsuits, does the pleasure of wearing them overcome the wish that you could simply be nude?

I guess if, given the choice between a small suit and nude, I've often taken the nude option so that mght be the answer. But there is a difference in that nude in a nude environment is different to skimpy in a textile environment, even if most of what I wear in a textile environment is not quite that brief but certainly a long way from board shorts.
