Why was the writing in the 50`s-70`s so much better??

In watching the old TV shows on Netflix from the 1950's into the mid 1970's, I feel that the writing for the dramas, mysteries and comedy shows was far superior to what we see nowadays. Does anyone have any comments concerning this??
