  Did you get an email that alerted you or did it the box come up that reads "inbox" etc.?

  I don't get any alerts by email, so I can only speak to what I find on the site itself. When I click on the "New Message(s)" icone, I am automatically taken to them. If this didn't work, I'm sure I could just go to my Inbox and I could still access them.
  
  For "Friend Requests," clicking on the icone should bring about the same result.

That would be the best option since you're not able to send a message with a friend request

You would have to send a message separately the usual way.   As for receiving Friends Requests, the same rule applies. If no separate message was sent, none will be received.   These functions are available on other sites, so it may be confusing to people who expect to find the same thing here and don't. As it's already been said elsewhere, the site here is pretty much built from scratch and the site owner would have to decide that adding the feature would be worth his while.

  Perhaps this could be put into a suggestion box for the owner to add when he/she is feels like making some updates and changes to the site. It would be nice to have that. I get several friend requests with any message and just deny them. I have it on my profile to send a message and many seem to not bother and just request so I do not bother accepting them.
