Has anyone out there ever decide to get into nudism to fight low
self-esteem, difficulties accepting their body, or other emotional
challenges?
Has anyone out there ever used nudism to nomalize nudity and "detox" theselves, i.e. deflate the ever growing social pressures toward acting sexually as the entertainment industry increases our exposure to full, partial, or implied nudity in movies and ads, creating a constant teasing and stimulation of sexual appetites?

Cheri Donna DawsonApr 26, 2010I didn't get into it because I had low self-esteem, but as others said, it greatly did enhance it. I used to not want to speak up at all...can you believe that?! :)

Sobe2010Original PosterMay 2, 2010Thanks for your reply. It seems that the older I get the worse I feel, as I become alienated by an increasing crowd that find people my age "old" and unattractive. As I try to take better care of myself, I also hope that spending some time in the buff will help.

Sobe2010Original PosterMay 2, 2010Thank you! very insightful. I've had the experience once. I was terrified to bump into the younger crowd and have "looks". To my surprise that day, there were mosty older people, who cosmetically speaking, could have used a bikini. I was perhaps the youngest that day, and I felt exactly like you describe.
Thanks again.ReactReply - SO
Sobe2010Original PosterMay 2, 2010Actually I can. That was me some years ago. Now I speak in front of small groups. It's sadening to see ow many people suffer not only from low self esteem, but also from distortions of their body image, to the point of developping mental health illnesses, all because of social pressures and attitudes.
Thanks.ReactReply - SO
Sobe2010Original PosterMay 2, 2010I think so. My guess has been that it probably creates a very different sense of Self, much simpler and hopefully healthier. It is what folks who responded so far seem to think.
The othe question would be, once you've gotten used to it, how do you tolerate being in the maine society the rest of the time?ReactReply - SO

Otherwise, thanks for your insight. Nudism has indeed contributed to raising people's self-esteem where body image is concerned. Whether it has actually beenprescribed, recommendedorsuggestedby professionals with this in mind is another matter. Probably not in North America.ReactReply - LA

Nope, I got into nudism because I LIKE to be naked as much as I can, whenever I can, for as long as I can.ReactReply - ST
SteveDec 11, 2015Yes - as a former chubby kid I've had persistent body issues, and in clothes have to work against the intrusive, negative, idea that I'm hiding, that if they could see my as I really am, it would be a bad thing. Naked, that evaporates.ReactReply - NU
nudonyDec 13, 2015- That's kind of my deal.
- From a philosophical standpoint, I had developed a fascination with nudism since childhood, from the various encounters I'd had with nudists. It just made sense to me to experience life without clothing.
- From a mental/emotional health perspective, I was dealing with self-esteem issues; which in turned fueled a rather unhealthy voyeurism - which just led to more shame/guilt.
- So I figured one way to deal with those issues was to tackle them head-on: by placing myself in a nude environment, instead of "lurking" from a safe distance. So I headed out to the beach and plopped myself right in the middle. At first, it was difficult; I was completely out of my comfort zone, I was dressed and was seeing nude people all around me "up close", and I immediately felt a strong sense of shame. I felt like running away; but forced myself to stay still. I was going to go through with it no matter what; and so I disrobed. And I almost had a panic attack. But I forced myself to stay nude.
- And then I gradually started relaxing. My shame started dissipating. One nude lady that was sitting nearby smiled at me. And I realized that it was "ok" that I could see her nude; and it was likewise "ok" that she could see me nude. I left a little while later, happy with my "breakthrough"; but feeling there was one more step to take.
- So I went to a nudist resort a few months later. I disrobed as soon as I left the front office, determined to stay nude the entire time I was there. I "saw" some people; but at that point it didn't matter anymore. I was happy being nude. I exchanged a few words with other nudists, without a care about their nudity or mine. I was over the whole "Peeping Tom" thing. These nudists were people just like me; and once you realize that, it's hard to objectify.
- So I continued with nudist socialization, coming out of my shell, getting to know and befriending other nudists, free of clothes and the mental "crap" I had been wrestling with for so long.
- With the proper drive/motivation, nudism can be a powerful tool for overcoming shame, physical disabilities and other mental/emotional issues. I wish more healthcare professionals realized this.

MikeDec 15, 2015It wasn't the reason. Simply always enjoyed nudism. But have to admit it has surprised me how much more open I have been in social nude environments. Don't think I would ever feel as comfortable with a group of textiles whom I had never or seldom met and yet it just happens without any stress or reluctance or feeling that you are intruding. In textile environment might be 10% who are welcoming. The reverse in nude environment. Si great.ReactReply - LA
Lakeman221Dec 25, 2015Another possible use of nudism is to get an all over tan, like most of us seem to prefer.ReactReply - SMsmash12Dec 28, 2015I've always enjoyed being nude as a great way to relax. Initially this was at home or in hotel rooms when travelling for work. There are not many opportunities to be nude in the city. I'm lucky enough to have a club I can visit in the summer months, and a few swims during winter. I'm not exactly slim, just overweight, although I've never been shy about taking my shirt off in public, or using showers in gym changing rooms.
So for me it was the opportunity to mix with other like minded people. I joined a local club, and I've enjoyed many a sunny day there talking to a lot of people. I've found that if you can start a conversation while nude, you have no fear elsewhere!
My club has open days, so I've often spoken to a few newbies who just wanted to give it a try. I remember one couple who said didn't like going to the beach as they neither of them had "good bodies", the man in particular said he wouldn't even take his shirt off. And yet both of them were standing in front of me, totally nude and loving every minute of it. He even wanted to walk down to the car park nude to maximise the experience!
I think a lot of people could benefit from the experience, a true naturist environment doesn't judge on your shape or size, and there really isn't anything to be scared of.ReactReply - AU
AussieFilipino1991Jan 12, 2016Being from such a hot and humid country, I remember always coming back from school and just stripping all my clothes off down to my underwear. When I would be alone in my room, then I'd go completely naked. I always found comfort in this, not just at a physical level but also being able to bare down and be with myself. I always felt I was in my element when I was completely naked. I always preferred sleeping naked too. At that age, I didn't consider myself a nudist, let alone know what it even was haha but I just found it very natural. It wasn't until I was older that I knew about social nudism and discovered how freeing that it actually is.
When I'm naked I feel like I am just being me.ReactReply - JS

More accurately, I would say it's affected my self-perception. I did become more aware of how I appeared, to myself not to others, and such led to positive changes in lifestyle, weight loss, etc.ReactReply - MEMemberJul 30, 2016
I just enjoy being nude in the sunshine. My wife calls me a shy nudist because I don't walk around the house nude.Going to the nudist resort and relaxing by the pool is my way of getting rid of the stress of everyday life.I am not in the best shape, but I am comfortable with how my body looks.

I feel more natural without cloths. When my skin is covered it starts feeling like it's suffocating and can escalate to feeling like it's on fire. Being nude is just all about feeling comfortable.
My wife feels cold before I do. I can sit in the house nude before the heat comes up in the morning during winter when it’s 55 degrees Fahrenheit. I also have a normal body temperature of 96.0 degrees Fahrenheit.
