Pope John Paul II has just been beatified by the Catholic Church. That is a step toward being formally declared to be a Saint. From his writings and teachings, it is apparent that he was supportive of the concept of a nude life style. I believe that it would now be appropriate for nudist groups worldwide to begin a petition drive to have the future St. John Paul II desiginated as the Patron Saint of Nudists. (For those who believe that this idea might be too far fetched, remember even prostitutes have a patron saint. i.e. St Nicolas.)

Interesting idea.  More interesting & kind of crazy that prostitutes have a 'saint'.

Interesting and really ironic I hear of christian developments in places like here. Around 15 years ago in the heights of the gay issues in one of Canadas major churches I decided to take one year off participation in our church to think on the matter of that these folks had better things to think about besides bashing gay folks. I have only entered a couple christian facilities since and have paid no more attention to the happenings of the Pope. A day at an occasional nudist gathering seems to have much more spiritual benifit. I have read that for the most declaration of nude lifestyle for most means a good old time shunning job.

I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who had this thought. It is especially gratifing to know someone of your stature endorses this idea. DesertRat

This of course bears most relevance to Catholics, who have the Saints. Karol Wojtyła aka John Paul II was a very controversial character, but he definitely honestly believed in what he did, so I understand deep respect many Catholics and non-Catholics show to him. Nevertheless there might be some broader conversation about his "patron saint" status as such decision would unavoidably bring out some dirtier skeletons from closets. In general I would be in favour of choosing a general "Patron" of nude lifestyle from history or mythology and Catholics of course could select one of their own eg. JP II as their Patron Saint.

I don't think the Catholic church would like that idea though!

Interesting idea to have JPII as a "patron saint of nudists".

I've also heard occasionally of that honor given to Saint Francis, who as a young radical religious took all off his clothes in public and handed them back to his father, and then committed his life to simplicity and service.  He insisted that when he died, he be buried naked.

So there's precedent, both modern and medieval, for understanding the relationship between holiness and nakedness -- and making the connection to simplicity.  I like that JP also talks about the beauty and simplicity of the naked form.

I had forgotten about this post since it was posted 4 years ago. However in the interim Pope John Paul II has been canonized by the Catholic Church as Saint John Paul II. I hope this movement gains momentum.
As an interesting side note: Did you know that there is a Patron Saint for prostitutes? It is none other that our beloved St. Nicholas. He was noted for giving money to young women who were in dire straits in order to keep them out of the practice of prostitution. Thus we have the practice of giving gifts in the name of St. Nicholas or Santa Claus.

I've done some research on the issue of Patron Saints and found some interesting facts. Any person or group may designate any Saint they desire to be their Patron Saint. There is no formal investiture involved. People can adopt a personage whose life is full of examples that personify a particular point of view. As more and more people of similar minds adopt a Saint as their Patron, eventually the designation will come to be recognized universally. As for nudism; I believe that Saint John Paul II wrote favorably on the subject and perhaps indulged in social nudism himself. Regardless of whether he practiced social nudism himself, his life and writings are a testament in the goodness of man and worthy to be emulated. Therefore, I am personally adopting Saint John Paul II as my Patron Saint for nudism and I urge all nudists to do the same. I am planning to write to AANR and TNS and suggest that also formally adopt this man as their official Patron Saint of Nudists. I believe that this action will tend to unite nudists as no other thing has done in the past. Remember that this action does not force anyone to adopt a new religion or change their religious beliefs. It really says that we're nudists and we are people and we deserve to be respected just as anyone else. Now we just have a Patron whose ideals we can follow. Does that make sense? Please let me know your thinking on this. DesertRat.

[/quote]To anyone you feel like telling. You can tell anyone on TN if you desire. It's up to you, you decide who to say it to or don't tell anyone. It can be your secret or you can write a letter to the editor of your local paper and announce it there. If you don't feel comfortable with the concept then don't reveal it to any one.
