Discovery Channel naked shows — General Discussion on True Nudists

I see that the Discovery channel has a couple of shows, "Naked Castaway", and "Naked and Afraid" airing now. So is this a sign that the media is opening up about nudity, or is just titillation to get people to watch the shows? And the blurring they use is quite annoying although "Naked and Afraid" does have an uncensored version.

Only nudity with opposite sex who isn't your spouse is illegal or even to talk (promote) about it. I saw some of the clips from the "Naked and afraid" online and would like to check out a full episode to get a better idea about it. I thought it was an interesting idea. Does anyone have a link to the uncensored version mentioned above.

I thought "Naked and Afraid" was somewhat amateurish and it didn't take them long to fashion themselves something to cover up with. As someone who has spent a lot of time in the woods naked, not having shoes is by far the biggest challenge.
DirecTV has both versions showing, but I've only watched the censored one so far since I didn't see the uncensored one until after I recorded it.

I saw 3 episodes of "Naked and Afraid" already and it's a great survival show. Just watched a "uncensored" episode and they still have blurred spots on their bodies. Not surprised, because the show is on cable tv and the average person in America thinks of sex when seeing a naked body.

One seen part of one Naked & Afraid show. I'm not sure if it shows a positive on nudists. Wish they would highlight a little of what naturism is and what is out there now.

I've now seen a few episodes ofNaked and Afraidand have come away with a surprising conclusion. The premise of the show is to have two cast-aways who start with very little and survive their environment. The fact that they fashion clothes is a part of their survival. What I found surprising was, except for one show where the couple both had about equal skills, the women have saved the butts of these big brawny survival experts. Some of those guys turned out to be real wussess who would have literally died if they didn't have the women to help them. To make matters worse, these guys kept degrading the women, even while they were being saved by them.

not really...they still blur out those parts that deem one naked,that to me is wrong.Show what is said.

Seen the trailers on cable her in Vn, so maybe it will be aired soon.

I too would like to see the blurring done away with as it does more to highlight than cover what is natural and if its so offensive.

Why have them naked?

Why produce it all.

Me thinks Just an draw card to help rake in the $$s

The positive I see is how it shows that other than for protection (such as form sunburn and thorns) nudity is OK.

The two shows were very different in my opinion.The one with the guy left alone on the desert island himself was very good. I'd saw his previous program on walking the entire length of the Amazon. I think it took him about a year and a half from memory. You could see the naked program was about him pitting his wits against the elements. Purely a survival challenge. With nothing at all to help him, He was truly naked, physically and mentally. The nudity was an integral part of the process. Nothing to protect him from the harsh sun, no pockets to keep anything. An extremely good show following the mental highs and lows as he fashioned his own survival. The only disappointing thing for me was that he resorted to using modern materials washed up on the island to make tools and storage equipment. A very good program that wouldn't have been the same without the integral nudity. It wasn't about nudity per say so the pixilations didn't detract from the show in my opinion.Naked and afraid was a poor cousin to this one, I think. The nudity seemed to be a gimmick to get the mackintosh brigade to the show. Didn't really see the point of the nudity. The contestants were allowed to bring a tool of their choice. So could have brought clothes but looking at what they picked I suspect that the production team had a hefty influence on their decisions. If you're billing the show as naked, then naked should mean naked, but I guess that some sections of the American audience don't have the maturity to handle non-sexual nudity. It's a shame really. The psychological impact on the participants was the positive aspect of the show. Showing how people cope under pressure. The nudity detracted from the whole experience. As I said, a gimmick to bolster viewing figures. The only positive was that the contestants themselves became comfortable with being naked in public very quickly.

I watched a few minutes of Naked and Afraid here last night, and was totally disappointed, guy in his speedo's gal totally dressed nothing naked about it and for those of us who go bush and rough it I found it all so boring, wont be watching it again.
The Asian shoot-em up cop movie was better viewing.

They're all about exploiting nudity for the average viewer. There's as much in there relative to nudism as apples to oranges. I find it funny that they're willing to go nude for the sake of the challenge but always seem to fashion "clothing" to cover up. The Professor from Gilligan's Island would be proud. Unless the clothing is for warmth or protection I find it bogus when they go into it knowing it's a nude challenge. Modesty still seems to win out. One of the things I find so great about nudism is we do what is most people's biggest fear so in that manner I guess I am biased against their modesty.

This show is really flirting with disaster. They have had people become quite ill but so far haven't lost any one. If the show goes on very much longer in its present form, I believe that a disaster will happen that will either kill the show, or the locations will become less extreme.

I've watched a few full episodes; and it seems to me that a rather large percentage of female participants do fashion themselves some coverage at some point. I can recall only a few opting to stay entirely nude the whole three weeks; Kellie comes to mind, in the Tanzania episode. But there certainly were a few others. And I certainly applaud them for staying true to the spirit of the show.
- There was another one (Alison) who opted to make herself a palm-leaf bra - but otherwise staying bottomless at first - because she was leery of sunburn on her chest. That made some sense to me, as coverage was for protective purposes. After all, even nudist women will sometimes do the same.
1. But a large number of them resorted to top and bottom coverage, sometimes even creating rather sophisticated garments, merely for the sake of not being nude all the time. Granted, there were times when even they had to be nude to go fishing or engage in some physically demanding activity. Sometimes practicality trumped modesty. But not often for some of them.
- I don't pretend to know what it's like to be a non-nudist female, completely nude 24/7/21 with a stranger and a clothed camera crew. It might be challenging and vulnerable. But as another poster mentioned, the show is not called "Clothing-optional and afraid." It's "NAKED and afraid." The idea should be to create coverage - if really needed - only for protective purposes. Modesty should not even be entering the picture.

We just watched the naked dating show on TV here in Australia.
We found the location used was great, wish we had something like it here locally.
Seeing people wandering around naked over coming, their insecurities re their body's was great.
Hopefully it will influence more people to try the nudist lifestyle.

The actors are naked. They see each other naked. They do not see, feel or are aware of the blurring. Just sayin'

I caught this show last night, as Discovery was airing a bunch of episodes before the newcone that airedclast night. One episode was "uncensored". I came to realization that the uncensored was an extra 5 minutes of film them shot, with rather annoying popup windows of tweets and random facts about where they are. Not really uncensored, given they still beep out the cuss words. Although the privates are blurred I was not upset with that. It is not about softcore porn here. Naked means stripped away and exposed to everything, not just clothes, but emotional and mental states also. The concept I feel is a good one also given the fact these people are not fighting for a big cash prize.
