The only good thing to come out of this ridiculous ruling is, it helps in reducing the birth rate on this over populated planet of patheticism.

Yes, I know I read that already. The newscasters have been saying over and over that California voters passed Prop 8. Well I want it clear that nearly half of us voted AGAINST Prop 8.

The percept of "Justice for All" boils down to a simple concept that says the rights of the minority must always be protected, even if it is a minority of one. The minority however, may not abridge the rights of another in seeking to enforce their own rights.

I believe that the Defense of Marriage Act needs to be rewritten to define marriage as a legal union between two consenting adults. The concept of marriage must be protected because people build lives, fortunes and futures based upon this concept. If it was meaningless, one partner could decide to leave and leave the other partner destitute. This is why the courts have defended common law marriages.

The Defense of Marriage Act bill became the law of the land in 1996, it enjoyed overwhelming bipartisan support on Capitol Hill.
In the House of Representatives DOMA passed 342 to 67
in the Senate, DOMA passed passed 85 to 14

That timing presented an unwelcomed situation for President Clinton, as The New York Times explains:

Mr. Clinton was never enthusiastic about the measure, but he was not on record supporting same-sex marriage at the time and, just weeks before his re-election, he felt he had no choice but to sign it. Still, to make the point that he considered it politically motivated, and to call as little attention to it as possible, he signed it after midnight.

It was an awkward moment for Mr. Clinton, who had done more than any previous president to court the gay community and promote gay rights, but he believed that Republicans were trying to steer him out of what was then the mainstream and damage his chances for a second term.
