Sharing for all of us who have had issues with neighbours.
We moved to a new property a few years ago. The fences were all short and broken, we spoke to the 3 neighbours who agreed on new fences and we requested 8 foot high fences and everyone was happy with that.
After the fences were up we started to go naked in our backyard for gardening, some breakfast and lunch days or just to have a sit in the sun. One day our back neighbour who we did not know well came around and said she could see us naked from her house and wanted it stopped immediately.
We didnt agree to anything and she stormed off. We walked around the whole back yard and we could not see any neighbours from our property so ignored her and kept going naked. On a Saturday afternoon the police arrived at our house, I slipped a pair of short on lol.
They told us the neighbour had made a complaint about public decency and said we were showing ourselves naked in public. The two cops were very friendly and said we were not required to comply but could they see the back yard, we agreed as we had no issue with this.
They stated that the area was totally enclosed from the neighbours, they said they would talk to the back neighbour and come back to let us know what happens. They came back in about 30 minutes and were both smiling and giggling. We chatted for a bit and they told us the neighbour showed them if she got up on her pool deck on tippy toes and then leaned right over almost falling off the desk, then she could see us naked.
I asked if this was a joke and they said no that she was totally serious. I then said what is her problem and they started laughing, I asked why, what did she say? One cop told us that her actual complaint was that one of the guys has very large testicles and she found that offensive.
I put my hand up and said to the cops, that would be me, we all had a laugh. The cops told us to keep doing whatever we wanted in our yard and that they had told her there was nothing to complain about.
Before leaving one cop asked if we ever went to Sunnyside, a popular nude beach here, I thought he was going to suggest we go there instead of the backyard. I told him we often went there in summer, to my surprise he said well I might see you there, shouldnt be hard to spot you and again we all laughed before they left.

noodengr2Mar 10, 2024awesome Cops who know how to deal with the neighborhood karen and have a sense of humor. I hope you meet up on the beach and hear about some of his other adventures dealing with the karens of the world.

Stone AndyMar 10, 2024What a great story! In the Midwestern US laws regarding nudity are often written vaguely enough to be interpreted in the eyes of the reader who may be easily offended. That means that whereas most nudity is nonoffensive and most people could care less, you never know what police or judges could make a big deal out of nothing. Here's to you with your big swaying testicles - may you share a naked fist bump with that officer at your local nude beach soon.

I agree wholeheartedly with you & the officers take on the prying neighbor. And I suspect the officers have more hilarious stories about public complaints & activities than we could ever imagine. Its good to know that you have ones with both brains & a sense of humor. If word gets around, you may even one day have a nude backyard party for the shift. You never know! LOL.

This is a great outcome for you both, and kudos to the cops who exercised real discretionary policing that makes sense.
You're lucky though, many cops would still have charged you and you'd find yourself in court proving you can't be easily seen in your backyard. That's lazy policing but it sure happens!ReactReply - ST
SteveMar 12, 2024Not sure what the charge would be since the Summary Offences act in Victoria sets the standard as the genitals or anus being exposed in a public area or within sight of a public area. That reads to me that visibility from a neighbouring back yard would be in the realm of neighbourly compromise.
I agree that it's good the police were sympathetic as they could perhaps put pressure on to some degree. Next time I see police presence at Sunnyside, I'll start wondering... :-)

CraigMar 15, 2024Great story with a great ending. When nudity wins, we all win.
My backyard is fenced in. To the right there is an 8 foot fence and it is not possible for the neighbors to see my yard. To the back is a 6 foot fence. If the neighbor is in their yard, they cant see into mine but if they are in their kitchen, it puts them just high enough to see in backyard but not a great view. I have a hedgerow to the left and in the summer, it blocks that neighbors view completely.
I am fairly certain that the neighbor to the back has seen my GF and I nude on many occasions and simply does not mind because nothing has been said in over 17 years. We are lucky in that I can stay nude while grilling or just sitting on the patio in the summer with a drink and some tunes.
I think most people are accepting of the nude lifestyle as long as you keep it non-sexual.

I live in an apartment that shares the main entrance hallway with my neighbor's. My front door has a window and a screen door, so during daylight, you can't see inside my house, only if you lean against it. One morning, while I was having breakfast naked in my living room, my neighbor stuck his face in the front door window, having a full view of me. He shouted, "Are you really walking around like that in your house?" To which I stood up straight and replied, "Yes, it's my house, and as long as no one from outside can see me, I can do it, unless they stick their head in my window." Since that day, that neighbor waves at me from his door and no longer comes near my door.

MikeJul 13, 2025well here in the USA if a neighbor can see you from their back yard then they are considered a "peeping tom", because they are infringing on your privacy. simply because your back yard is considered "private property" and not "public property". The reason it is considered private property is because the property owner doesn't allow others to freely come onto their property at any time of the day or night without their permission, or to assemble on their property at any time. So your neighbor can be charged if a judge feels the need to teach the neighbor "Karen" a well deserved lesson to mind their own business

The fences were all short and broken....[/quote] Here in Australia in the State of Queensland, if neighbour can see you from their property, even when you're nude on your owned private property, it is deemed you are nude in public. Therefore it's an offence and one can be charged. There are multiple offences one can be charged with depending on many factors including the age of those who spied you. And what's more is that it doesn't matter literally how visible you are/not. The only 'out' for you is if the neighbour is going to extreme measures to catch a glimpse of you. Your situation in your story may well see you okay...I assume Ironically you can under some relatively new laws pee on the bush at the local shopping centre and not be charged. Again, this is depending on circumstances.ReactReply

Tom DJul 21, 2025I have a privacy fence around my deck and pool, but one neighbor could see over it from part of their deck and one window. When a new neighbor moved in, I put a wind screen on top of the fence. At the end of the summer, it was in bad shape so I took it down. My neighbor saw me and asked why I had put it up. I explained that I often sunned and swam nude, and I knew there were spots where he could see over the fence. He said it wouldn't bother him if he happened to see me nude. I haven't put a wind screen up since.

That original story is a really good example of the crazy world we live in, and maybe the discrimination some people face. Reminds me of a situation 35-40 years ago when I worked for an inner city Council in Melbourne. Had a complaint from a lady saying her neighbours walked around naked all the time and the privacy requirements in planning were not met. So myself and a girl who worked with me went to the complainants house, an older lady living alone. We asked where she could see into the neighbours as the back fence was high and there was a lot of vegetation screening too. Her house was a single storey too, so no upper level. She took us to her laundry and said to me, climb up on these steps, stand on the washing machine and look into the neighbours, so I did. And clearly this older lady could see in when she did go to those measures to perv on her neighbours. The girl I was with said we should tell the neighbours all is OK, so we knocked on the door and to her disappointment they guys were clothed. Nothing further needed. Case dismissed.

In the New Jersey township where I live, the ordinance relating to nudity keeps changing to keep up with changing attitudes, particularly in regard to gender equality. BTW, the legal term is "public/private place," not "public/private property." Many commercial spaces are private property but public places. Your front yard is private property but may be a public place, depending on local law. Your definition, regarding whether you let others freely go there, applies to public vs. privatespace(in most jurisdictions!).ReactReply - MA

Houses are about 200 feet apart, with trees and wild shrubs on most of the property lines, but one neighbor was able to see the patio clearly. In past years I would put up a cardboard shield, then sit on the sunbed and take off my shorts. Last summer I mentioned to the neighbor that I liked to sunbathe nude on the patio and hoped they didn't mind. Their answer was that it was my home and I could do what I liked. After that I not only went out there without the cardboard shield but also without my shorts. But not so much this year. I like it hot but not 90 and above.ReactReply - TD

NigelSep 19, 2025Most of our garden is shielded from the neighbours by a large hedge, but there are a few areas where we could have been seen naked so use to be careful in these areas, until one day i was in the front garden again shielded by bushes, when our neighbour came round and saw me naked, to my surprise she wasn't at all bothered, and after a brief conversation she was not at all concerned that we were naked in our garden, from that point on we generally were naked when possible in all of our garden

Older naked man gets seen by female neighbour who turns out to be totally fine with it.etc
I use to think it was just an old man fantasy story.
now I think you all have the same neighbour.
