I am unpacking a new Defender security DVR and cam system. I have a concern about its use during times of enteraining nude guests, rather its non use. Anyone have any ideas short of tearing the system down to have guests feeling comfortable?

FF32404Aug 2, 2011If the cameras are obviously visible, then you will need to cover them up with something obvious so people who see them know you are deliberately NOT taping them. If people see uncovered cameras throughout the house, they will get suspcious even if you tell them it's on stand-by. That's what I would do.

MichaelAug 2, 2011seems like it kind of kills the point of having security cameras in your house if you cover them up... especially if you're entertaining nude strangers. I would maybe see if you have a way of turning selective ones off, for instance if the nude area of your house is in the back then keep the front ones on and the perimeter ones on the back of your house and turn off your back porch ones, that way you can still have an eye on people in and out of your home without violating their privacy... at the same time, it's your house, and if you do put up a "surveillance equipment in use" sign at the front of your house legally you've notified them you're in the clear and anything taped is informed consent. If it were me I'd either confine nude areas to one point in my house and warn people that "going outside of these rooms means you'll be on camera" or just warn them straight up that you have a security system that records 24/7 so if they go nude, there's proof of it that will be used if for some reason it is needed legally... and a surveillance equipment notification sign will do that well enough

If I know you well, and I know with certainty that you can be trusted, AND anyone else who may have any access to that system whatever, then it doesn't matter. If I don't know you that well, it's my first visit, something like that, and I see cameras, I'm outa there ! So, depending on how well your guests know you, ( not so much how well you know them ) cover or remove them completely, with possible exception of entrance/gate camera, and outside perimiter cameras absolutely not in any area where guests might go. Then, don't worry about it. A camera in an area where a guest should not be, well, they should not be there ! Clothed or not is irrelevant. Cameras in any area where guests are expected to be is crass at best.ReactReply - MI

It's totally legal, it's called implied consent, the posting of a sign that says "no trespassing" is grounds for legal action if you trespass, whether you read it or not. The posting of a sign at a pool that says "no lifeguard on duty, swim at your own risk" is enough to not make you legally liable if you have a public pool that doesn't employ a lifeguard and someone drowns. Secondly, if you have friends that are uncomfortable being under surveillance equipment naked, tell them to leave their clothes on... period. If they aren't comfortable being under surveillance in general, tell them to stay out of your home. If you're going to have a security system you keep it turned on otherwise it's a waste of a lot of money... and if you're going to be wasting money anyway than instead of making that check out to the security company make it out to me. Did you know they can legally survey dressing rooms? The reason most companies don't is because they would lose business, but they have every legal right to it as long as they post "surveillance equipment in use" in the dressing room area. If you're going to have a camera-operated surveillance system it makes no sense whatsoever to turn the cameras off because you entertain guests, whether they are nude or whatever. I know if I had a camera system it would be on... period. If you had a problem with it you could walk your happy ass out my house.ReactReply - MA

ThomasAug 2, 2011Having known the OP for a long time, I don't think the intent is to record a nude party but secutiry. I think the best advice is to cover the interior cameras when entertaining guests. Also cover any that would look onto a private back yard where people would be going also.

Security should not be required, apart from outside after everyone is asleep.ReactReply - RM
Randy MosleyAug 2, 2011It seems that it is implied that this is a house but not stated as fact. If it is your house, why would you have a security system running 24/7 other than the perimeter of your home and be able to turn on and off the interior surveylence cameras for when you're home or gone.
Just seems silly to be that worried to have cameras on 24/7 throughout your home. Are you that terrified where you live that you need that much security? I've learned no matter how suffisticated the system it can be disabled by anyone that wants to get in.ReactReply - DE
DesertRatAug 2, 2011
For some reason this thread gave me the creeps. Video of a nude house party? NO NO!!!
I agree. I wouldn't want to attend a party where I was being taped, even if I wasn't doing anything illegal or immoral. A person who has to record his guests is really paranoid. If you think that you have to record my actions, please don't invite me. Security cameras should be focused only on exterior areas.ReactReply - RU

But the simple sight of 8 cams throughout the property would be an issue for me if I was on someone elses place turned off or not. One of the reasons for the cams is security as during our home addition rennos mine and contractors expensive equipment will be loose about the area. The other big reason is the 4 or so cams that will be pointed to the perimiter of the acerage. We periodically have at least one cougar stalking our yard. We know when the dogs won't leave the deck anyway but a few cams should add to insuring everyones safety. I have been into the new system and I see cams can be on or off at will. Good idea just hanging something over. Good fun just everyone undressing and covering the cams with clothes. May even pick up a few clothes hooks to place above the cams.ReactReply
