  During one of the interviews being done on the beach today, a woman in a very small thong popped up behind one of the commentators, and you could see the panic to move the camera so they could block the view! All because some frumpy old farts and cranky religious nutters will call, email, file complaints with the FCC, sue and otherwise have apoplectic fits because they and their precious little baby children were shocked, horrified and permanently damaged by seeing exposed buns on TV. What a joke. Bring back the traditional nudity of the original Olympic Games and tell all the prudes to stuff it.

  There was no question that NBC would not be able to capture the full emotions of the opening ceremonies but the host committee didn't do them any favors with the dull show about the growth of Brazil that they tried to portray. When things turned to the athletes and the Olympics the enthusiasm rose dramatically. As far as skimpy costumes; what we saw was rather tame by Brazilian standards. You have to remember that Brazil is the home of the Brazilian wax job and this was developed for very good reasons.

  I was thinking the same things. Too many commercials, too much random commentary, and not enough shots of the skimpy costumes. The Brazilian costumes are skimpy because they like to celebrate beautiful women and show them off.I was also thinking about why do the beach volleyball women wear such tiny outfits while the men wear long pants and tank tops. For gymnastics, the women wear tight, skimpy leotards while the men wear long pants and tank tops. I agree, the olympics should go back to the original naked olympics.

  I'm sure they would rather be wearing thong bottoms, for the very reason you point out. They keep picking at their butts. Nude would be much better. So would turning off some of the commentator's microphones. They blather on and on about obvious stuff...annoying.

  I don't remember which Olympics but one of the long  time commentators ( now dead) Jim something or other, kept hyping that some kids choir was going to sing something special.   He kept stating it was " coming up"  When it finally did come,  he introduced it, then proceeded to talk while they sang, then the cut to a commercial  before the kids were done.   I thought,  can't get much more tacky than that.
  As for the Olympics themselves,  i think that all participating nations contribute money and build , or at this point, renovate the venues in Greece and every 4 years host them at that location.   Cities would stop spending money they don't have to build new venues each 4 years.    And since Greece was the site of the original ancient games it is the logical place to hold them now.
  A similar site could be constructed in Switzerland for the Winter Games.   You know nice neutral country that everyone likes and has real winter
  As for these opening ceremonies i enjoyed them other than the extended manmade climate change crap that they forced down the world's throat.  Leave the propaganda out of it show off the beauty of your city and country.    I wish I had a list of countries that came in and see how many we missed due to a plug by NBC for a show that premiers this fall and will be gone by Thanksgiving.     Once the games begin there is plenty of downtime between heats to plug your ads.
  Ok rant over  some nap time before I greet the athletes that will pedal up to my home later.  Cross country duo pedaling about 80 miles today.

  I love the sounds of some games. Like baseball; the crowd, the stadium announcer, the crack of the bat or thud of a caught ball. In person, it's soothing. On TV, can't stand it because of the announcers (with the exception if Vin Skully, I can listen to him all day). Or Golf, the sound of a swing and hitting the ball, the crowd reactions on a distant green, birds chirping. Then the banal announcers ruin it. Another one I absolutely love to listen to is Curling...the yells...YUUUUPP  YUUUUPP....HARD...WHOA...the sound of the rocks bouncing off each other, but the announcers just wont shut the hell up!
  
  So many sports have a unique sound that I find soothing or exhilarating, depending on the sport. But the announcers need to learn when to shut up and let us watch the action. They don't need to tell us that this or that team really needs this point...WE KNOW THAT ALREADY, or that so and so just needs to focus and calm down, DUH.
  
  Announcers...listen to me; SHUT UP.
  
  There, I feel a bit better. Now back to beach volleyball, where the announcer is meticulously explaining how sand works.

  This may be a little off-topic but in America we recently had the quadrennial political conventions. These were the first conventions that I enjoyed watching because C-Span broadcast the proceedings live with no interruptions, commentary or advertisements. We didn't have to watch reporters interviewing each other.
  I wish there was something similar for the Olympics, especially the opening and closing ceremonies.

  But seriously, it's funny how I get smirks at the gym wearing my Skins or Speedo compression shorts from people working out wearing baggy half length pants. However, they don't smirk at a male Olympic athlete wearing the same thing. It's called high performance clothing people, look into it.

I still enjoy watching the women play beach volley ball. On occasion, we dirty old men will make grammatical errors. As I was typing, volley ball came on TV and the Dutch women are covered from head to toe. I hope that this thread was not the cause.

  For Live video coverage of the Olympics --- if you are in the U.S. ---
  Have you tried --nbcolympics.comorolympic.org??   Both advertise video links. Some of them should be live.  However, you might need to be a cable or satellite subscriber to access the live links.   I don't subscribe to either, so I am blocked from viewing any of the live online broadcasts via NBC TV. ... At least, I haven't found a way to do it, yet...:-(
