I've been accused of not being a "dedicated" nudist because I slap on tons of sunscreen when I go nude outdoors. So I thought I'd ask the opinion of others. Do you have to be tanned to be a true nudist? I've worked in medicine for over 30 years and have seen first hand the devastating effects of skin cancer. I feel tanning and health choices are a personal decision, so I leave it up to the individual to decide if the want to tan and how much. Am I wrong?

spideymann66Mar 13, 2011Of course you don't have to be tan to be a truenudist! I protect myself as well when I go outside!

limestone26Mar 13, 2011No tan lines here, Dokfixer. But no tan at all on me. I'm just extremely fair skinned and have had skin cancer, so you'll never see me tanning which means I'm blindingly white! And darn proud of it too.

George_in_WVMar 13, 2011Personally I like having an all over tan and I am not all that happy about spreading a lot of chemicals on my body. I just take it easy in the sun by gradually tanning. I take it easy in the beginning and don’t just sit and bake in the sun during its peak periods.

ChuckMar 13, 2011I love being outside nude but, I burn real easy so I have to watch how long I stay out in the sun. Wish I tanned easier. But me and sunscreen are good friends.

Cheri Donna DawsonMar 14, 2011I definitely don't lay out and tan. I usually put on sunscreen before spending any time outdoors. I really need to apply it to my face after washing every day.
I am a genuine nudist and have been for over 40 years.

Sunbeam65Mar 14, 2011Not having 'tan lines' is just a wonderful side benefit of being a nudist. Personally, I enjoy a good healthy tan gained from time relaxing at the beach or poolside.

kenoHickMar 23, 2011Artificial tanning beds hurt your skin and eyes, so forget the commercials.
Tan 30 minutes every day for a week in April, then it's ok to get sun all day for the rest of the season until November. There's no problem for me and I'm half milk pale Irish. I still have a tan from last year and I never use sun screen but who knows if it's dangerous.ReactReply - BU

Prior to the mid 1800s, everyone skinny dipped. Swimwear hadn't been invented.
The world changed quickly and by 1860, Queen Victoria of England had outlawed nude swimming. The English speaking world's opinion toward nudity changed under her reign. It started to become more "Clothes Minded."
The U.S. has a long history of presidential skinny dippers: John Quincy Adams, Teddy Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson all abandoned their skivvies. President Johnson even went skinny dipping while in office with evangelist Billy Graham, a fraught endeavor if ever there was one. Other famous promoters of skinny dipping: Benjamin Franklin, Walt Whitman, Mark Twain, Herman Melville and Norman Rockwell.
Nude swimming is as American and fun as hot dogs, baseball, and apple pie.
As of Sunday, August 19th, America has a new famous skinny dipper, Kansas Congressman Kevin Yoder. A news story broke that he went skinny dipping in the Sea of Galilee in Israel while on a GOP political junket. More than 20 other GOP lawmakers and staffers also went into the water in different stages of dress and undress.
The FBI was brought in to investigate.
In a 2006 Roper poll, 25% of adult Americans admitted to having skinny dipped in mixed company. Worldwide, topless and nude sunbathing are increasingly common vacation choices. All beaches in Spain are now legally topless and many are nude.
One of Congressman Yoder's mistakes was picking a spot to go skinny dipping where it is illegal to do so. What he should have done was go to Tel-Baruch beach north of Tel Aviv, which has a long history of topless and nude sunbathing. Then, instead of being in hot water, he'd have been in refreshing nudist waters.
The American Association for Nude Recreation, America's nudist advocates, recommends people skinny dip in appropriate settings like their own back yards, nudist resorts and clubs, legal nude beaches and so on.
Obviously, Congressman Yoder is a typical American who enjoys skinny dipping like over 50 million other Americans. In the spirit of keeping him out of trouble in the future, here is a list of 10 beaches where he can legally skinny dip without leaving North America.
And for everyone else, if you haven't tried nude swimming yet, I heartily recommend it. It is one of the most fun, relaxing, refreshing ways to vacation.
THE BEACHES ARE:
•Haulover Beach, Florida
•Gunnison Beach, New Jersey
•Rooster Rock Beach, Oregon
•Hippie Hollow, Texas
•Baker Beach, California
•Hanlan's Point Beach, Toronto
•San Gregorio Beach, California
•Wreck Beach, Vancouver
•Robert Moses & Lighthouse Beaches, Fire Island, New York
•Collin's Beach, Sauvie Island, Oregon

MitchAug 28, 2012I like to be tan. I however suffer from "Farmer's tan" Since becoming a nudist, I have tried to blend the two tones together a bit. But I have seen some people who look like dried leather. Yikes!
I think there is thing as too tan, and I do not want to go that far, or anywhere near it.
Some sun is good..Vitamin D I believe, but they say only 10 minutes a day is needed.
Something like that.
Stay naked!ReactReply - CO
Curt, or CowboyAug 30, 2012Typically, I'll slather on the SPF-60 when first getting into the sun.
It takes 30 minutes or so to achieve "full protection." ( which they say is about SPF-15 )
I'll re-apply if I notice color change.
Seems to work well.ReactReply - MI
missannethroap1Aug 30, 2012While I much prefer outdoor nudism, most of my nudist activities have always been inside because I've always lived in cities. Even the monthly swims of the organization I was a member of in my hometown were held in an indoor pool. Now, I live in the country on a beautiful piece of land with some secluded areas begging for me to use them for nudist recreation: But, the people I live with are not nudists so I will have to wait until they go on vacation or something.
When I am out in the sun I never use sunscreen and I get dark on my arms and legs real fast. Since I could never be nude enough time to have it even I always have some very bright white areas that make me look somewhat like I'm wearing tennis shorts when I'm nude.
So, my point is the tannes of one's skin is in no way a reflection on the nudeness of their heart, mind, or soul.ReactReply
