just wondering. I don't know if I would do it or not.
it's reasonable to expect different laws in different US states.

i'd certainly have a tee shirt and shorts in the seat next to me.

I drive shirtless most of the summer and have been stopped more than once and it was never an issue. Also barefoot on those occasions but was wearing shorts or a swimsuit.ReactReply - PA

This is a result of some brain dead guy who had a gun and shot a cop because the cop could not see into the car. BobReactReply - SI
silversurferDec 6, 2017From what i can tell it seems that it is legal as long as you aren't doing anything lewd. Drove back from the nudist resort this Sunday without bottoms on. Kept the shirt on because of the seat belt. Was a wonderful 2.5 hour drive.

NudeColbyDec 31, 2017From my understanding, mere nudity isn't against the law in US but the caveat is that many states have laws that leave things to open interpretation. For example, many states have laws which states that being nude and being lewd and lascivious is illegal. The meaning of lewd and lascivious is an open interpretation and majority of states do not define that. That being said, it all depends on police officers and other law enforcers to decide what constitutes as lewd and lascivious. Some, if not many, will think your nudity alone is lewd and lascivious.
I have driven nude before and never been caught. To drive nude safely simply means to follow common sense. Do not do anything that will draw attention to yourself, obey the traffic laws, and exercise caution. Again it all boils down to common sense: do not speed, do not play your music loudly as that will attract attention, do not do it during rush hour, and/or do not go around exposing yourself. Also, if you can, take some precaution by getting your windows legally tinted and ensuring you have clothes you can quickly and easily put on if problem arises.

journalistbroDec 31, 2017typically i have heard of people driving in underwear just in case. that way if a child sees you somehow, you won't get in "be put on a list" trouble

AlDec 31, 2017I have driven naked in 19 US states and so far, no problem. I drive nude on long trips and when I'm returning from nude recreation (skinnydipping, hiking, etc) when I haven't needed to get dressed to reach the car. In some states it's established as not illegal (TX, CA are two), but I agree with a previous poster that in many cases the laws on what constitutes disturbing the peace are probably open to interpretation. I sort of look at driving naked in the same category of hiking on public lands; you just use good judgment and accept that there is a small risk. So be careful, and as previous posters suggested, don't speed or otherwise break traffic laws.
My preference is to drive totally bare, it's great for maintaining a more uniform body temperature, there's less chafing than in pants, and it's just more comfortable. But I always have a pair of shorts in arm's reach for a quick slip on. I cover my lap for buses, I no longer worry about big rigs. I do not skinnydrive (a new coined term?) on city streets, only on two lane highways, rural roads and interstates.
Good luck if you decide to try it, OP!

Technically NO, but once you step out of the vehicle you are in public and that changes depending where you are. Just drive with a pair of shorts handy or towel with a tie so you can cover up if you have to get out. The officer will know you are not hiding anything and will probably let you off with a warning cause you gave him a laugh.

Stone AndyJan 10, 2018I agree that it's a bigger risk to drive with tinted windows than nude. I've gotten honks for nudity but a ticket in Chicago for driver side tinted windows, which I removed and my ticket was thrown out. If you sit high people see little but truck drivers seem to see everything. Good luck!

rrfalconJan 12, 2018Don't forget that in addition to the laws regarding driving nude in your area, you also need to know about court decisions that relate to those laws. Some of the decisions count as precedents, and they'll be taken into consideration during a new case.

BillJan 12, 2018Whenever I've driven nude (most recently on a trip from Tennessee back to Florida), I keep a pair of shorts at my feet so that I can easily slide them up if necessary. I've started to have some sciatica issues and there the waistband of shorts/pants hits is right where it starts to cause me problems. I found that if I lose the shorts or pants, I am pain free while I drive.

bradf09Jan 12, 2018Been to camp in Decatur and drove home to west Texas bare. If you have a pair of shorts handy on the floor, or sit on a towel you can use as a cover up fast if needed seems to work fine. Was at a friends one night and drove home this way. Had spilled on clothes so,they were sitting in passenger seat. Got stopped, cop, asked about towel and clothes said I didn't want to ruin seats of car and was less than a mile to house so...no warning, no ticket, just be safe ...got home fine. Was concerned that I had proper shoe size to drive though which was odd ..

PeteJan 15, 2018I would have assumed that driving nude though you're in your own car, would still be considered being "out in public" and therefore a possible arrest, because of passing cars etc. But you all seem to think not (unless youre putting out lewd behavior) so I'd like to hope you are correct.

PeteJan 15, 2018In response to nudeColby - I think you're correct about different states or jurisdictions and how local law enforcement / judges etc interpret that. A man driving nude on a highway on Cape Cod is very very likely not going to encounter a problem. A man driving nude on a highway in a small town in Alabama ...oh lordy.... there'd be hell to pay!

You might get away with it in and around Provincetown, but try driving anywhere else on the Cape (since there are no actual highways on the Cape, I assume you mean "state highway" Route 6 which is an undivided road with a simple double yellow line down the middle) and see how fast you get arrested under Chapter 272: CRIMES AGAINST CHASTITY, MORALITY, DECENCY AND GOOD ORDER. If your nudity is "offensive to one or more persons", then you are guilty of "indecent exposure" and there is no exemption for nudity that doesn't have a sexual nature. You will need a good lawyer just to keep from having to register as a sex offender.ReactReply - RT
Reuben TitusJan 16, 2018Since i am driving one of those high profile vehicles. And have a bunk to slip into when stopped. I can drive nude constantly. I just have something handy to lay on my lap when going through scales or whatever situation. Maybe sitting at a light with another high profile vehicle on the right. Even if they do happen to glance in it would look like i have shorts on at least. If i were to get stopped on the road, i can slip into the bunk and slip something on easily before needing to communicate with officer. But its winter and the cold is seeping in when its cold out. So im not running nude all the time. And when im doing frequent pickups and deliveries its not convenient to get dressed every time i get out. So i stay dressed.
