I've got a nice, secluded back deck where I'd like to work an an all-over tan. Except for airplanes circling the local airport, it's not visible to neighbors or passers-by, but I figure that it's just a matter of time before a friend/neighbor/deliveryperson/etc. walks in on me. My feeling is that if women want to lie around undressed, everybody smiles, winks, and says "ooh-la-la." But if a man does it, he risks ending up on a sexual predator list, and I don't want to risk that. Besides keeping a towel close at hand, anybody got good advice on maintaining propriety, in the absence of ensured privacy?

Rusty - do you have a fence/gate aound the property? If so a padlock on the gate whilst sunning yourself may be the solution. But if you don't have a gate then I see your risk.

Nope, no gate, just a mildly circuitous path of hedges. Certainly no guarantee of privacy.

If you cannot be seen from overlooking nearby property, then anyone invading your privacy is not in a position to complain.
You are not breaking any law, so stay naked and enjoy the freedom that is your right.

I have a gate to my backyard, but that doesn't guarentee privacy, so I also have a sign posted "Beyond this point clothing is optional".  It is your yard and you should have the right to enjoy it as you see fit.

I lay out on my deck all the time but I have a gravel driveway so I can hear anyone coming and will probably not be caught by surprise.  I just lay a sarong on my lounge chair in such a way that I lie on top of it and can quickly wrap it around my hips if need be.  All of my friends and co-workers know that I might be nude so they are taking a chance any time they come to visit.

I don't have alot of unexpected company stopping by so my deck is my little oasis.

Our deck is 3 feet above the ground, has an enclosed 4 foot railing, surrounded by 8 foot schrubs, and the only entrance to it, is thru the house.  To top it all off, my parrot makes a heck of a racket whenever anybody pulls into the driveway!

It varies. In Boulder, you can be nude if you cannot be seen from ground level (I think from public property). That means it is not illegal if someone climbs up to peek over the fence. If your fence is too low, then it is illegal. It's all about the laws and ordinances in effect where you live, or where you are at the time.

How about this...somewhere along the circuitous path to your back deck, hang a bell with a sign that says "If nudity offends you, please ring".  That would give you enough warning to cover up with a towel.

[/quote] Personally, I prefer everyone announce in some way, regardless of anything else, so a sign along the lines of "Owner may be armed, and is easily spooked. Please announce your presence."  Of course, anything that conveys the message, such as... "Owner doesn't hear well. Please knock/announce LOUDLY."

Very fortunate I have a very pvt backyard with great landscaping and a fence so for someone to come in they have to come through the gate.

Somehow, a rumor began circulating througout my neighborhood that I was a nudist. Coincidently
this occured shortly after I did a TV interview during the Record Skinny Dip, last year.
Sunbathing  privacy on the patio is now assured since neighbors now  make it a point to go to my front door and ring the bell.
