What is the purpose of having a Friend or starting a group?

As you all can tell, I’m a newbie. I received my first friend today. Exactly what is a friend? What is the purpose of friends? Surely it’s not just for statistics.
Also, why are there so many groups where there are tons of members, but there are no discussions?
What am I missing something?
I had to scroll for a mile (over two years) just to get to the “New” button? It confused me for a while.

Hi DonaldandCheryl, welcome to TN.   No, you're not missing something. This site is a bit difficult to navigate when you first arrive.Go here to get up to speed.Make sure you brows the Site Tips in the FAQ's we have compiled on the FAQ & Computer group forum.   Friends are a bit of a joke, for some reason some people like to collect hundreds, it makes them feel wanted :)   The main reason is that you can restrict who sees your pics to friends and or truenudists.   I think the reason that the groups die, is that there is no notification of when a new post is made, and people join too many to monitor all the time. There is a tendency to join them as a lazy way to state on your profile that you are interested in a particular subject.     Phil.

ThanksPhilfreeeukThats kind of what I suspected. I'm really not here to look at people. I thought this may be a way to meet like minded people.

Most of the time on "friends" lists it seems many become like the use of rungs on a ladder. Get more notification if you are at the top, like saying "Here i am" or "me first, me first". Heck we came here yrs ago and knowing that some were going to b certified, was the real drawl. We have communicated with some special folks here that hopefully we shall meet more in person. As for groups, heck just a way to project what need not b put in profile. With summer here not on very often, but do ck in from time to time. Enjoy , for this site is better than alot....just a simple man's opinion and besides this was painless

First I would like to say Hi and Welcome.
Like Rabbit, I have met some great people in real life from here, and having them on your friends list makes it easer to keep in touch.  When I planned a trip to nude breach, I posted it in bulliten as well as in the Hippie Hollow group to let others know I was going.  Only people on your friends list can see your bullitens.

I admit I haven't been active in the nude fishing group I created lately, mainly because I haven't been able to go fishing in ages.
Well, the friends thing really isn't too much of a joke.  We have actually made real friends, and have visited them.  Just be selective, watch out for fakes and pic collectors. There's been a lot of speculation why there isn't much discussion in groups.  People join them, and forget about them.  I think if an icon of some kind appeared next to the name of a group a person belongs to, whenever there's a new post, it would keep people checking the groups and posting.
Opps! ... praps I was a bit harsh there :( put it down to lack of sleep :) Agree with the icon idea, it would make a big difference.     There -are- several members that have been lucky enough to meet in real life with a number of friends that they have made on here. Many more, like me, have made several good friends, but due to distance, sadly are unlikely to ever actually meet.   Many of us take the view, that we don't want to collect strangers profiles, so we don't usually accept requests, without having first got to know them a bit in the forums, or at least exchanged a few e-mails. I find that after a while, you just forget to send requests, or who is already a friend, there are several regulars on the forum that really should be on -my- list, but we just haven't got round to it yet.   You naturally get to know others, only by reading their posts, and chatting. That way you get an idea if they are on your wave length. I think to send a request, purely on the strength of their profile, (unless it is very comprehensive) is less likely to be successful.   As Mieke said,Ker's Baresare probably the most active group, if you have the time :)   Also bulletins and updates seem to be only from friends, or other group members, and if you have too many, then you may miss a few, due to the turnover. The 20 friends that appear on your "My Account" page are in order of "last logged on" so again, if you have too many friends, you don't see when your really best friends last popped in. To see -all- your friends btw, look to the right of your profile pic at the "View My" section, and click on "Friends."   Unlike a club or resort, there is no one here keeping out the gawkers and weirdo's, so with such easy access, there are bound to be plenty of them here. Just try to stay aware of that, don't put too much detail on your profile. I think it's a good idea to restrict pics to friends only, or at least true nudists. But most think that to go as far as to restrict your profile to only friends, is going a bit too far, and puts people off, because there is then no way to see if you are a potential friend or not.     Take your time, read the FAQ's and get to know the place, I'm sure you will like it, and make some good friends too.     Phil.
There are friends and "friends" - there are a few of my listed friends who I have a sense of as real people and would love to meet up with IRL - on the other hand, I noticed the other day my friend count had gone down and couldn't for the life of me figure out who was missing.  So it goes.
Know exactly what you mean, it's happened to me a few times. We had a list going on the certified forum to help, but I've forgotten which thread it was on. I just lost one, this is why we don't have many girls here. She had just joined and sent this nice message,     "Just to take up a little of your time to tell you that your profile is great. I just become a member here and have been a nudist now for around 10 yrs. I'm kind of checking this thing out here and wondering how the best way to go about it is. There are a lot of pervs on the internet one can not be careful enough. But I learned a lot from you message about the pvt settings on here want to say thank you (Name removed)"   I sent back an appreciative reply, she sent a friend request, I accepted,  ......... next day, she was gone!   NO prises for guessing why :(

Way back when, BMan2000 had a more-or-less tongue-in-cheek approach to questions such as these. You can find it here:http://www.truenudists.com/forum/viewthread.php?id=6053.
