Anybody home?

What does it take to get responses to messages around here? I'm new to his, messaged several people to introduce myself, and hoping for some encouragement. Not a single response other than being added to friends lists. Is there a trick to making contact with another human being? I've had better luck walking in a room full of strangers. And they didn't even have their clothes off...
