I am new here

I am new here and probably not sure on the ways of the chatroom,but I have been in other chatrooms and if a person want to enter a private chat with someone they usually ask before barging in and start private chats....I was in the chat room today and was almost besieged with private chat windows popping up all over the screen,myself I find it a tad rude to just interupt a nice chat with others wanting to chat with out asking first........is this the norm for this chatroom or did I just catch it on a bad day?
