Theres a strange gap in how we talk about orgasms. Womens pleasure has been written about, studied, mapped, argued over and, finally, described in the detail it deserves. Mens has mostly been treated as self-evident. It happens, theres visible proof, end of story. Yet, what you can see puddled on his belly, splattered in the bathroom sink, or wherever he aimed it happens only during the early few seconds of something much larger. Different parts of the nervous system firing in sequence, a full-body muscular and neurological event, and a moment in which the conscious mind is simply no longer in the room. Heres the thing I most want to get across, and Ill return to it because its the whole point. The pleasure doesnt slowly build to its peak. It arrives at its peak. Theres a rise, yes, and boy do we feel it, but that rise happens in less than a second. It goes from something to everything in that second. Nothing else in the human body feels anywhere close to it. A caveat: this description is my experience, based on my own notes, videos of my orgasms filmed from various angles and repeated viewings of them, cross-checked against researched physiology and conversations with many other men of all ages. There is variation, but the architecture is shared. The Approach, Briefly The build-up matters less than you might think, but its worth mentioning. When I have sex or masturbate, my arousal settles into something heavy and patient. My heart rate climbs. My breathing becomes shallow and higher in my chest. As I get close, my already erect penis gets even harder, the head swelling to its maximum capacity, and my scrotum tightens slightly. Theyre the most visible and reliable signs that my orgasm is imminent. I notice muscles throughout my body beginning to hold a low level of tension without being told to. Thighs, glutes, abdomen, jaw, hands and feet. They're not rigid, but everythings gradually drawing tighter. My attention narrows until whole rooms fall out of awareness. In the final few seconds before I orgasm, it feels as though all my sensations gather somewhere unexpected. Not in my penis, but behind and beneath it. Deep, low and central. It develops an edge, a fullness, like a muscle being held at the very end of its range in a pleasurable way. But, and this is the part worth remembering, on any honest scale, all of that pre-orgasmic sensation is perhaps 5% of total intensity. It feels good. Its absorbing. Its nowhere near whats coming. Seconds 1 to +1: The Switch At minus one second to orgasm, the point of no return, my sympathetic nervous system fires. Deep inside, my seminal vesicles and prostate contract, pushing semen into my prostatic urethra, while the sphincter at the neck of my bladder clamps shut. My chambers loaded and sealed at both ends. Its not visibly obvious to anyone watching, but when I focus in on this moment on video, I see what looks like a slight, slow-motion contraction of my anus, as though it briefly pulls in on itself, while my perineum and scrotum lift, then settle. All of happens within less than a second. Locked and loaded, I cross the point of no return, hit zero, and my orgasm sensation takes over. What triggers it isnt my semen moving, but the accumulated barrage of sensation from my penis and deep inside my pelvis finally crossing a threshold in my nervous system. Since I began masturbating, every touch has been sending signals through the sensory nerves into my spinal cord and brain, steadily raising the level of arousal. Then, in an instant, those signals reach the point at which my nervous system can no longer simply contain and process them as more stimulation. The whole circuit changes state. Its like pressure building behind an electrical switch until the contact suddenly closes. What had been concentrated sexual pleasure in my penis is transformed by my brain into the all-consuming experience of orgasm. It rises fast, arriving with the speed of a detonation, the sensation travels outwards from deep inside my pelvis. It seems to race up my spine, across my scalp, down the backs of my thighs and into my hands. Its in the small of my back and at the base of my skull. My entire body is experiencing it simultaneously, and it feels almost too much for my body to contain comfortably. The pleasure intensity climbs to around 95% in less than a second. Its notoriously difficult to explain the male orgasm in words, but I would describe it as pure relief multiplied a million times over. Not an explosion, exactly, but a rapidly consuming warmth and tingling that absorbs every cell in my body. Deep, ecstatic, immeasurable pleasure. During this first stage, Im completely disconnected, in a state of almost dissociative blankness, as though my mind has been smothered by the overwhelming sensation. I usually breathe out during that first second with a low, mostly involuntary: Aaaaahh. My testicles physically draw upwards towards my body, and my scrotum tightens further, squeezing in on itself until it looks almost half its usual size. If Im sitting, my glute muscles tense and lift my hips slightly as my legs stretch and stiffen. If Im lying down, my legs extend, my feet point outwards, and my toes flex rhythmically. If Im standing, my knees buckle slightly as I lean forwards by a few inches. My face gives way to a look of complete surrender as my head tilts back. It is only just beginning. Seconds 0 to 3: The Gap For me, the gap lasts about three seconds from the first rise of orgasm feeling at zero seconds to the first ejaculatory contraction at three seconds. Three seconds doesnt sound like anything. Inside me, it feels vast because time genuinely distorts here. The vision behind my closed eyes whites out or fills with flashes. My hearing becomes distant and underwater. Theres a specific euphoric quality to it, unlike any other kind of pleasure I can describe. The intensity climbs from ninety-five to ninety-eight. I manage another breath in, then exhale with an involuntary moan, a sound born from uninhibited, seismic ecstasy. The sensation of ejaculation is still on its way. The outcome is guaranteed, but during this gap, I am transported into pure transcendence as the pleasure overtakes my entire being. Then it lands. Seconds 3 to 4: The First Contraction The first contraction doesnt come from my penis. It comes from underneath, from my pelvic floor: a sheet of muscle suspended between my pubic bone and tailbone, and specifically from the bulbospongiosus muscle, which wraps around the internal base of my penis. What fires is a clench. Hard, complete, and shockingly strong. It involves the same muscles Id use to stop the flow of urine. My anus contracts tight and fast with it, involuntarily, and in the same rhythm. The origin point sits deep, low and behind, and the sensation radiates forwards from there. That first clench is like a piston stroke. Behind it, in the chamber loaded in the second before my orgasm began, sits my ejaculate. The first contraction drives most of it forwards at once. The initial spurt carries the greatest volume of my entire ejaculation, moving through my urethra quickly enough for the passage to happen within a fraction of a second. That movement has its own sensation, entirely separate from the muscular clench: the feeling of my urethra distending. Its a narrow tube being forced suddenly wider by a thick, warm volume of semen travelling through its full length. What I feel is a hot, urgent surge moving forwards along the underside of my penis: a sensation of width more than movement, the unmistakable feeling of something too large for the space it occupies passing through at speed. Two things are happening within the same half-second, and they dont feel the same. Beneath: a deep muscular seizure, blunt, heavy and central. Forwards: a hot, dilating rush, sharp, narrow and directional. The first is where the orgasm seems to live. The second is the physical mechanism of ejaculation. And laid over both…
