My thoughts on clothing optional vs nudist

OK here are some thoughts. There are my thoughts only. I've been (luckily) going to Shangri La Ranch out here in the Phoenix area. It has been absolutely fantastic, I've never been to a resort this frequently and the more I go the more I want to be there. I get there around 4 times a week for somewhere around 2 to 3 hours each time (usually mid day) and BTW my all over tan is outstanding I'm very proud of it.

The highlight of each visit is the fantastic stroll I take around the entire grounds. If it were up to me I would stroll around the entire time I'm there, the beautiful feeling of walking around without clothes is great!

Every time I visit, I take my clothes off as soon as I get in the car, and I don't put them back on until I get back to my residence. It is another awesome aspect of the visit.

So the thing I discovered is that this particular resort is "clothing optional" not nudist. Now I know for newbies that is an attraction because they are hesitant etc. But for me, I would definitely prefer a nudist resort. There are a fair number of people who have various states of clothes on, and for me I would prefer everyone to be nude like me.

There are some Russian-style sex segrated banyas in Chicago which are clothing optional. Around 15 years ago the patrons transitioned from being mostly naked to sheet-wrapped. Now I feel less comfortable being naked there since I'm in the minority and unwilling to bathe with textile interference. It's easier if everyone is just naked and men don't have to second-guess what others think about them.

I agree. Sorta like a nude beach. And not everyone is naked. Just staring at people that are naked. Being naked takes down another wall that people put up

If I had my druthers, I'd live in a clothing-optional world. Where each person is free to choose what, if anything, to wear. Even at a resort, I appreciate the opportunity to choose -- I always choose to be nude. That, notwithstanding, I would prefer that everyone chooses to be nude.

Events held at my house are not clothing-optional. They are nudity required. I do not permit spectators. Each person has the opportunity to choose whether or not to attend.

From the perspective of a resort owner, the best option is the one that attracts the most paying customers. My guess would be that a good approach would be to have the area closest to the entrance clothing-optional, but if someone cares to venture further, the clothing must come off. This would be similar to many websites that allow non-paying visitors some access to the site, but if you want to use the better parts, you have to pay.

Something that seems odd to me is that some people talk about wanting the CHOICE to be clothes free then immediately want to tell others what their CHOICE ought to be. Maybe thats why so many outside of the practice dont find nudists credible. Just a thought

Its sometimes a question of being at a comfortable temperature.

From experience Ive seen many people at nude resort in clothes because they think it too cool to be nude, while others are quite comfortable naked.

Arent we saying the same thing to mainstream society acknowledge our difference and dont force your clothing choice on us

The vast majority of the people are nude. Most of the ones who are wearing anything are either with someone who is nude and/or wearing too little for other nearby beaches (bottom only for women and thongs for anyone).

Appreciate the answers. Couple of things:

    1) It is absolutely not a temperature thing, it's in the 80s and 90s here in the Phoenix area.

    2) I'm not saying I want to tell people what to do at a clothing optional resort, it is what it is (and I love being there). I'm just saying for me, a nudist resort is preferable.

Again, I like the responses. Keep them coming

Im not sure if weve ever been to a nudity required area, other than in the pool itself at just about every resort weve been to. I can say I almost always opt for fully nude including on our Bare Necessities cruises which are the most likely C/O venues to have a high number of clothed people, especially in the evening when groups are heading to/from the main dining room which does require clothes. For me the experience of being nude in new situations is more interesting than being in a nude required area. My number one place on my list is La Jenny in France. Not because it is nude required (which I think it is) but because I would be able to play a round of golf nude. Weve gone grocery shopping at Club Orient but it would be interesting to be able to spend a day nude doing other errands like going to the bank or just walking around town. These options do exist in places like Ile du Levant (the naked island) and Cap dAgde (the naked city) and Id like to try them. They are both clothing optional (other than the beach at Levant which could end up the first nudity required place we ever visit if we get there before La Jenny) but would be higher on my list than a nude required resort. Basically we dont ever inquire whether nudity is required when we make our plans. As long as it is allowed were good.

But I would rather have them clothed or partially clothed and comfortable with my nudity than naked and uncomfortable. And the discomfort could be due to climate or their own hesitation to be nude. It doesn't matter. I figure that if they're in a nude environment, they at least show an interest in nudism. And the starers. I haven't seen a lot of them in the resorts, but I expect that you'd see them more at nude beaches, especially when the beaches are conjoined with textile ones and it's easier for them to wander off their beach onto ours. But here's the thing: the more nudity they see, the less likely they are to consider nudity fascinating for its sake alone. Sooner or later, they realize that they're not going to see the sculpted, bronzed, sexy bodies they've seen in the pornos or their fantasies or wherever. They see us. I'll bet they'll just be disappointed, get bored, and move away. But there may be one in hundred who thinks "That could be me. I could do that." And that person is the one we're looking for to join us.

In a perfect world what one wears would be a personal choice, and no one would care what other people choose to wear. Unfortunately, thats not where we live, and there is no simple solution. Ive never been affected by someone elses clothing choice, but apparently some people are.

It doesnt bother me at all if some choose to be clothed at a clothing optional venue. Just so long as its ok that I be nude!

Right as long as they arent gawking and they dont want to manage my choice I am good. The preoccupation with making people feel bad because they arent naked the way I choose to be is as unhealthy with the preoccupation of those who want me to conform to their clothing choices. As long as I have the freedom to choose I am good. That is all I would ask of someone at a resort and of the mainstream society.

Public areas like nude beaches should be clothing optional, and I see a lot of couples or groups at such places with some nude and some clothed participants. I'm glad that that they can enjoy each other's company any way that they're comfortable

Resorts can make their own rules,. I'm glad that they can accommodate me naked, and I wouldn't feel uncomfortable even if I was the only one.

I will go to a home pool party next week where nudity will be expected (actually, clothes won't be acceptable). The hosts have discovered that if they make it "clothing optional, " a few people will stay clothed, and then others become self conscious and put their clothes back on too. I see their point. They have other parties where nobody is naked, and everyone seems to be agreeable with that too.

I've never hosted a clothing optional gathering at my house. I had a neighbor stop by a few times while I was naked and he stayed clothed.

So it seems like the consensus is I'm being somewhat of a dick wanting to go to nudity required venues instead of clothing optional venues. Well if that's how I'm viewed so be it.

I know there are clubs that require nudity out there, just haven't been to one yet. The club I've been going to for the past few months is clothing optional. There are no other clubs within an hour.

I'll repeat that I've had a fabulous time every time I've gone there and I'll keep going there. If there was a nudist only club right next door I would certainly choose that one but since there isn't I'm ok with enjoying this club.

Bare Oaks in Canada requires complete nudity. All their staff is nude including kitchen staff or at least that is what their promotion photographs suggest. I havent been there but have spoken with other who have. Other resorts like Turtle Lake are clothing optional and do equally fine. Its simply a matter of philosophy to me and in that regard I follow the philosophy that nudity should never be forced on anyone. As Marc Alain Descamps suggest we dont know what life circumstances (physical abuse etc) may cause someone to be hesitant to be unclothed in a social setting. Public beaches on the other hand are another matter. They should always be clothing optional IMO. Trying to require nudity false into same trap we are trying to get out of I.e. being required to wear clothing. Furthermore since they are public and supported by public dollars it makes sense that everyone has the option to be as clothed as they choose. While we need more clothing optional public spaces for nude recreation as Lee Baxandall tried to promote in the US and some European cites have allowed it doesnt make sense to me that folks who want everyone be nude like them would be worried about gawkers in a public space. Thanks to the OP for starting this thread despite a any difference of opinion. Thank you to the commenters for one on the best and substantive conversations in the forums in a while.

Whoa, there! I don't think you're a dick for wanting to go nudity required. That's perfectly up to you, and I don't expect... hell, I don't even want... a world in which everybody agrees with me.

But I do like venues where people can feel comfortable being whoever they are, in whatever state of clothing feels right to them.
The nude beach in Toronto is an example of where clothing optional is a bit of a problem. There are clothing mandatory and optional beaches next to each other, but the clothing optional beach is filled with clothed people. I think it would benefit from being nude mandatory, especially because the textile beach is so easily accessible.
Pursing that approach would be a guaranteed way to lose the clothing optional beach. Whats wrong with being clothes free around clothed people if you have the freedom to be clothes free and they arent stopping you. The best way to keep the clothing optional aspect of the beach IMO is to keep showing up and keeping clothes free to show folks how natural it is not to try to shove them off of it by making nudity mandatory. Co habitation should be the goal not exclusion.
