How to play***LAST PAGE***Below is a four letter word.  Copy and paste it into your post (don't quote or the quotes could get ridiculously long). Change/Replace one letter and type it in next to the original word.  The next person to reply will need to copy and paste two words and so on and so on.No repeating of words.  (To check if a word has already been used, hit control F, a "Find" box will appear on your tool bar, type the word in there. (Thanks for that tip LookN!, Your way is fine too, Phil...I just don't remember what it is!) Let's see how many words we come up with by changing one letter at a time.RULES:1. This game is loosely based on the board game SCRABBLE.  We are following the rules for acceptable words as set forth by SCRABBLE.Acceptable words:"All words labeled as a part of speech (including those listed of foreign origin, and as archaic, obsolete, colloquial, slang, etc are permitted". (Note on foreign words - they must be words that have been incorporated into the English language, i.e. Fino (Spanish sherry) is acceptable, Vous (French for you) is NOT acceptable)Unacceptable words:"Words always capitalized (proper nouns), abbreviations, prefixes and suffixes standing alone, words requiring a hyphen or an apostrophe".     2. As much fun as it would be to rearrange letters, that defeats the purpose of the game.  THE CHALLENGE IS IN CHANGING/REPLACING ONE LETTER!!!       3. You can only play ONE word at a time.     4. If a word is challenged, the correction should be made by the person who catches it and play continues from the correction forward.  If words are lost because of that, then shame on all for not catching it sooner.  Before you "change" a word, please make ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN it truly ISN'T acceptable by looking it up in the final source. See next rule.     5.  (as suggested by Desperado). The following is the final source on acceptable words, if you can't find it here, it's NOT acceptable:Official Scrabble Players Dictionary (OSPD)***Please note: in this source the plural tense of a three letter word can often only be found by looking up the singular. ex: LIDS is only listed in source under LID. ***       6. On occasion players post simultaneously creating a double thread.  The game moves on from the FIRST new word to be posted.  Please take a second after posting to look back and make sure this has not happened to you.  If it has then edit and change your word to follow the word that was posted first.  That has been the unspoken "gentlemen's" rule of this game since day one and has helped to keep it a friendly game. 7. PLAY NICE! NO TROLLING, FLAMING OR RUDE REMARKS ABOUT ANY OTHER PLAYER PLEASE!  THIS GAME WAS CREATED AS A PLACE FOR FUN AND TO TAKE A BREAK FROM THE HEATED EXCHANGES THAT SOMETIMES OCCUR ON OTHER THREADS.
Phil, Read Rule # 4 You should have changed it and continued with your word. Waiting for Syn could hold up the game.
Sorry! .... just trying to stop an error occurring,    I'll go back to sleep now,   carry on!

There are about 9 alternatives to ship to continue playing the game. LOL.  Ship was the only choice that effectively ends the game.  I know Lin's trying to take a break for the weekend but will send her another message.

Okay....for the scrabble game to continue, we'll have to go back six words and follow fain with something else.  Otherwise it's over. Is everyone who is playing willing? Tom, Nicky, Linda, Knarfe and others?

It seems we've reached another impasse in the scrabble game. For the game to continue on we'll have to jump back 6 words and change type to something else.  Taking a vote on it, this will affect (effect? - never can get those two straight!) the turns of Nicky, Tom and Johniai.  Is that okay with you guys?

Sorry all!  We've been away most of the weekend and with my limited time on TN was distracted by nonsense.  I see I'm the one who posted Hems.  Oops!  Will see what I can do to fix it...
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/hems

Depth/bored/unbored - thank you for your help.  We are all aware that hems is really a word. However, the final authority is the OSPD. As Hems does not appear there, it can't be accepted in this game.  While it is quite frustrating when an actual word can't be found in the OSPD, it is also part of the challenge.
Everyone who is actually playing the scrabble game, the fix will require going all the way back to kelp and changing it.  Is everyone up for that? Three ayes in the next 24 hours and I'll fix it.  I don't like the fix, but it is in the OSPD. Otherwise the game ends after 13 months and 1835 words.

I'll give an aye under protest. I always thought that plural forms of words that are in the Scrabble Dictionary were legal. Thus hems should be legal and the game should continue from there.

Okay, that's three ayes to make the change.

Now I have another vote on the table.  I agree with Linda's "protest".  But I'm bound by my own stupid rules.  They weren't so stupid initially, because the OSPD used to list the plural form(and past, present and future tense) of a three letter word if you looked up the singular form under exact matches. That's not the case any more.  Can we all agree that the plural form of a three letter word is acceptable?  If we can all agree to that then the game will just go on with no changes.  Looking for three more ayes and I'll adjust the rules....
