Interested in the Chautauqua gorge in mayville ny and Zoar valley gorge in Gowanda ny. How difficult are they to access physically and are they safe from the authorities?

Hello. I ran across this thread while looking for information on supposed resorts in Lakewood, NY, and Frewsburg, NY. If you've heard anything on these areas, please message me. I've been into the gorge at Chautauqua and some of the trail is an old road. At one point there is a sign (on a boulder) warning hikers that they are about to enter a clothing optional area. That area is kind of like a local swimming hole that is clothing optional. Nice place, but certainly not an "established" naturist area. The trail, while not a "walk in the park" is easy going in and a bit more difficult coming out because it's mostly uphill. No issues with local authorities that I've heard.I've also been to the area in Zoar valley, but that was ~ 1973, before it was popular. No issues then, but can't comment on recent times.

I have been to both, but not in the past several years. The Chautauqua Gorge is a pleasant location, but often sparsely populated. I have been there when I was the only one there. My wife and I hiked through it several times when there were some folks there. Its probably best described as a skinny dipping hole. I used to hike in Zoar Valley before the DEC began issuing citations for public lewdness to those opting to sunbathe nude. I think, from reading reports on line, that the nudists have all but abandoned going there. Its too bad because I used to enjoy a hike and then skinny dipping in the creek and hanging out with fellow nudists. I guess all good thing come to pass.

From a couple friends that work in NYC, they have found several people that lay out on rooftops.
