Men's room observation.

Today while catering a huge company picnic, I took a pre break. I walked into the men's bathroom and went to one of eight urinals to do my business. Four others were occupied. When I got done I turned around to see a young man 20s? waiting until one was open that did not have someone on either side. Really? Are guys that shy?

I do have a friend of mine that can't pee if someone is around. But I do think the younger generation is a lot more conservative these days.

There are a lot of guys that are pee-shy. It's not so much hyper-modest as a feeling of psychological pressure when you feel you're being watched. It isn't that uncommon. The fact that other guys are paying attention, as evidenced by this thread, probably reinforces the pee-shyness.

My name is Taller, and I am pee-shy. It's kinda crazy... I am a gay man and a nudist. So, I am not shy around other men. I don't mind being naked, and I certainly don't care if another man sees my junk. And, I am FAR from conservative. But yeah, there's just a thing that happens, and it's torture! I can't explain why. Busy airport or ballpark situation where guys are lined up and everyone is waiting on me ... that's a lot of pressure. It won't happen. I'll even wait until I have to go super bad, get to the urinal (I keep trying) and it's impossible. The urge is totally gone. The weird thing, is if I go pee next to a friend and we just talk and whatever, then it's not a problem. Another friend gave me his secret, which probably only gay men my age will appreciate... close your eyes and imagine the TLC video "Waterfalls" and sing the words to yourself picturing the girls dancing on top of a waterfall... works like a champ! LOL

I also grew up with troughs at arenas and airports but when urinals were available, my friends and I would go every other one or wait outside even though 2 hours earlier, we were taking a gang shower in the locker room at school. Makes no sense but we were kids.

There is a guy that works for another company that when someone is at one of the 2 man urinals he takes a toilet. If you both walk into the bathroom he will take the toilet. There is a divider between the urinals yet he prefers to take the toilet. I have gone in there and he has been standing at the urinal but there is no one else in the bathroom. I like to have fun with these types of guys and purposely take the urinal next to them ever though there could be 10 other urinals open. Is that wrong?

Technical name is Paruresis or Bashful Bladder. It is quite a common social phobia. Basically, Shy Bladder is an anxiety disorder. As long as nothing is wrong organically, it is intense social anxiety and embarrassment that causes an individual to tighten the urinary sphincter muscle so that they cannot go. ... It is not known for sure what the cause is of paruresis is. I used to have it when in long queues to pee. The pressure to get in and out of the rest room quickly, creates a tension that stops the flow! There are ways to overcome it, but not many guys will try to be helped. Social conditioning by our conservative, moralistic society about the naked body, nudism and sex is, in my opinion, the problem.

Fenway Park had them until the current owners decided not to build a new stadium and renovated Fenway after they won the World Series in 2004. Foxboro Stadium might have had them, but our seats were in the end zone, so we were stuck with porta-potties (thank God the Patriots left the 18th century behind when they built Gillette Stadium). Growing up I never saw them.

More and more younger guys won't even use the urinals. They'll wait for a stall to open and pee in the toilet with the door closed and locked and there are several urinals open! So I'd say, yeah... young guys are really that shy. ;D[/quote] I've noticed the same thing and it's beyond shy. It's verging on pathological fear. I'm not sure what is causing the problem.

So much fascination with other guys'public bathroom habits. We have read a description of the discomfort some of us have lived with despite being nudists, we've read a medical definition. I disagree with the proposition that it is due to opprobrium regarding nudity per se, maybe potty training with impatient, stern caregivers, maybe early experiences of being stalked in a public bathroom. Ultimately for the afflicted man and a helper to work on together.
I am interested in the source of this fascination, noticing others' behavior so carefully. Assigning pathology by many on the thread. Does it make you uncomfortable that someone doesn't share your ease in urinating? Does peeing next to someone form a male bond? Does it matter that you don't see their dick? I am asking as one who for many years had a hard time urinating with someone standing next to or behind me. I had no idea that other guys were paying attention.

As the guy who originally posted the topic I had no idea what if any the responses would be. Yes there were dividers between the urinals. This event had well over 1200 people at and the eight urinals and two stalls was the main guys bathroom. There was a line out the door of the women's room. If the mentality of this young man spreads us guys are going to be waiting like the women do. Pee shy ? Yes I have heard of it. Might be the case here but I seriously doubt it. The engineer thinker in me was annoyed at the very inificenet use of facilities.

From another perspective
In the past I have avoided public restrooms as much as possible. Not through being shy, started at or even someone looking at my dick. I don't mind that at all. I just don't like to use them.
Most public restrooms stink because most guys can't aim or just don't bother and there's never an air freshener that's any use. And on average 95% of users NEVER wash their hands. (source: https://www.livescience.com/37326-bathroom-hand-washing-habits.html)
If I need to pee in a public restroom I will always use a stall to go for a pee. ALWAYS. Even if I'm the only person in the restroom.
The simple reason being, I hate the thought of splashback from myself or from anyone next to me.
I've never used a urinal or trough in my life and if I'm truthful ... I have no idea where to aim the stream for minimal or no splashback.
For me it's that simple. I'm not shy, I don't have any problems in peeing with others around heck I'll pee in the middle of a packed out arena if you want. As long as I can wash my hands afterwards of course :-)

Have you noticed how some guys, at a urinal, will position themselves so far into the urinal that they're touching the sides of urinal. My guess is they don't want anyone to see them 1) pee or 2) their dick or 3)both! I think by touching the sides of that dirty urinal, it's far worse than being seen! ughhhh!!
I personally don't stand that close to the urinal. If you want to see what I have, go ahead... enjoy :)

And another perspective, re the efficient use of available facilities. Drives me nuts to finally reach the mens room, due to overriding need to poop, and find some nit locked up pissing in the one stall instead of using one of numerous urinals! And frequently, said nit , has sprayed the dang seat. Good grief people, have some consideration!

I certainly think the younger generation is, as well as a percentage of men between that age and my own (56). You see it in urinal etiquette as well as guys that practically fear getting naked in front of others in a locker room. I can't say what it is about younger men, but certainly I recognize it in situations that years ago men would not have been as shy or as cautious...

I think the younger generations are fearful of photos of them being shared with others in an unflattering matter.

For me it is slightly different. I don't mind other guys seeing me naked and I don't have a problem with someone seeing me pee (in the past friends have seen it on rare occasions).
In public restrooms I am just not at ease and when it is really noisy I sometimes even have to wait before I can go when using a stall.
The problem for me is the vulnerability of opening up to the world. I have it with urinating, defecating and ejaculating. I need to feel comfortable and either alone or with someone I really trust before I can do it.

In the locker room at the gym, I am nude for as long as possible. So are lot of other guys. It is common for guys to be seen talking while nude while there. I am not shy being nude around strangers.

At Orient Land Trust, a clothing optional resort up in the San Luis Valley of Colorado, the bath house is unisex, and the urinals are visible to anyone who walks into the building. So it's not unusual for two naked men to be at the urinals doing their business when a kid (who might be naked, or maybe not) runs in with its mother (who might also be naked, or maybe not) right behind, and trots into one of the stalls which are right behind the urinals: and no one bats an eyelash. In my times there, using the urinals, I've engaged in conversation with other men about everything from the flora and the fauna of the place to our urologists and prostate issues: but sometimes we just take our leaks in silence, flush, and walk away, naked.

Seems really healthy (in so many ways); I wish there were more such places.

It "threw me off" at first; especially when a Mom with her small son hoisted him up to the urinal next to me. All three of us were naked; and I had never experienced anything like that before. I was also surprised by how quickly I got used to it. After that I didn't pay it much mind. In the textile world, though...this would be unthinkable. Especially nowadays.

Turtle Lake Resort has a unisex bathroom that has stalls and urinals. I have stood nude at the urinal nude while a woman was in the room. They do have a women's only bathroom too. I am glad they have doors on the stall

Two points occur to me arising from the above posts.
Firstly it is usually possible to avoid splatter by pointing your penis in a suitable direction. Some european manufacturers used to put a picture of a bee under the glaze a the right point for men of average stature.
Secondly, if there is a set of five vacant urinals in a long row I will sometimes in a moment of perverse mischief use the middle one, thus forcing the next person to either us one next to somebody or wait until one of the three of us has finished.

The low mounted urinals are in compliance with the standards set by Americans with Disabilities Act.
