Hi ya'll, I was wondering if anyone would be willing to share insight about nude hiking experiences on public trails, particularly in the California area. What was the general reception like to your being caught unclothed? Did the people you bump into along the way seem to mind? What are your strategies for mitigating encounters and preventing any incidents from occurring?

The only nude hiking I've done was at resorts, so I can't comment on other places except to say that it's recommended that you bring some sort of wrap or shorts (if you're a guy) or a sarong (if you're a gal) so that you can cover up if requested to. From what I've heard, if you come across a ranger, you'll usually be just sent off with a warning, unless you're really being blatant about being naked in front of people with children.

I have camped nude in wilderness areas and just generally kept out of sight of other people.

I can only tell you what I have experience while hiking nude along a National Forest service road near Lake Castaic in Los Angeles County.

When I first started hiking their, I was very nervous and was constantly covering up if I thought someone was around.
In 2010 I did my first World Naked Bike Ride and this gave me the confidence to not worry about being seen nude in a non nudist location.

My first encounter came later that year when I was hiking back to the car and suddenly these two dogs came running up to me barking followed by the guy walking them. I did say I hoped my nudity did not bother him and he responded it made no difference to him.

Since then I have passed countless others and had only two very negative reactions.
Reactions normally range from stopping to talk to averting there eyes as we pass.
These encounters include three L.A. County Sheriff's Deputies who were responding to a report of someone illegally camping in the area. I put on my shorts to talk to them and they did check my ID but other than that no problem. In hind sight I think I could have stayed nude and it would have been OK.

As I have said over and over in many posts, I believe our fear of people being offended by the simple sight of a nude human is over blown. Yes, if you were to ask them if it is OK to appear naked in public they would probably say no, but if you were to ask if they personally had a problem seeing someone nude, if they answered honestly, they would say it was not a problem.

I hope you find an area where you feel comfortable hiking nude like I have.

The wife and I were hiking in Pennsylvania, She topless, me nude, when we came across another couple. I thought we covered before we were spotted, but that wasn't the case. They had the high ground on a hairpin turn, so they must have had a good view. We stopped to exchange pleasantries, and to give directions, the entire time the guy stared at my Wife like she was raw meat( newbies). We went our separate ways, thinking she was finished with topfree hiking, but not 100 feet later she pealed off her tanktop and continued walking. I always regretted getting dressed. I wish we had just stayed nude, but you never know.

I'm usually biking nude and always have gym shorts on handlebars. I can usually see 1/2 mi ahead and have only had to whip on the shorts a couple of times. The trails I use are rural and remote.

I have hiked nude and what a great feeling. I did a 5 mile hike on state owned land. I did not see anyone on this walk. I did another walk on this same trail and had shorts off and pulling shirt off when a guy on bike rode by. He said that's not what I wanted to see. I had my back to him when he came up on me so all he saw was my naked butt.

You know with things like Naked and Afraid on TV, which seems to be quite popular, I am less concerned about being seen in the mountains naked. That said, I have only come across people four times, and all four times I pulled on shorts. Two of those four times, after we exchanged pleasantries, I thought, I didn't need to do that. They wouldn't have cared. I have come across many clothed people when I have been hiking on a 2200 acre clothing optional property, but that doesn't really count. But it is a good feeling to be able to think that if they have a problem with my being naked, it's their problem, not mine. Not that anyone has had a problem. If they are there, they know they are going to see naked people.

I'm yet to dare to hike nude. I'd never be able to cover up in time and would probably be tripping over my shorts with just my ankles covered! Nearest I've got lately it's walking a beachside trail with my wife in her bikini (as commonly seen on any beach) and me in my small swimbrief (when almost all guys wear knee-length 'shorts'). A camp group in wetsuits with snorkels came the other way, so we just stepped off to the side. :-)

SSS, I too have never hiked nude but the idea appeals. Not aware of places around the Mornington or Bellarine Peninsulas where we would do this or in Victoria full stop. Sounds more a NSW or QLD idea, I think. SBN.

Then if no one at the beach the briefs come off. Done that many times.

Since there's no law against males going "topless", it seems to me the easiest way to hike nude in a "questionable" area would be with a wrap-around kilt with a velcro waist fastener. It would be easy to carry and quick & easy to put on if someone comes into view. I bought one [kilt] for when I go to nudist resorts - yes, there are times at a nudist resort when you might want to cover up.

The valley is located in south central Colorado near the town of Alamosa. You can Google it for the website address and I believe there is a locations page on TN.

A friend and I were hiking nude along Lower Bear Creek in the San Gabriel Mountains a few years ago.
About an hour into the hike we came across two forest rangers going in the opposite direction.
As we passed each other they just smiled and said "Watch out for the poison oak!"

Ive hiked nude in the Las Padres National Forest many times on several different trails and gated roads. Although I typically choose times and locations to avoid other hikers and mountain bikers, I have had several encounters over the years. Only one of those was less than pleasant and that was two women who kept their eyes on the trail without looking up. Most people would simply smile or make a comment like: thats one way to keep cool.

I have also hiked nude on BLM lands in Central Oregon, once covering 12 miles and only seeing one other person. Evening hikes in the high desert as the temperatures drop from the days highs are often good times to go. Be careful to time your hike to avoid being caught out in the dark and you will have a peaceful hike and miss the scorching daytime temperatures.

Have been hiking nude for many years and have had several encounters with textiles. Most were friendly, I normally have my hiking kilt. in my hand to cover those parts that may be affective to some. People are generally ok with this old guy. Only one, said "OH Really", another event. park rangers drove up from behind a friend and me, both naked. saying " someone else might see guys, please keep your shorts on. .
Most parks or beaches, I tend to find a secluded sections to be nude. No real problem. Just be prepared to cover-up if needed. If people are there before you, ask if they are ok with clothes optional sunbathing.

I went to the local national park a while back. It is the only local place to go free hiking. I met a textile m-f couple who were headed back to the parking area. We exchanged pleasantries. On my way back out, I met a f-f couple. They didn't speak. They did keep looking back at me. There is another place where it is a camping area. There is a paved road. Sometimes I stay on it. It is almost a mile around the circle. There have been several pass by and just smile and wave as they go by. No one has seemed put out or complained. Now that it is spring, I plan to go as often as possible.

hiking nude is one of a must activity while nude, but sometimes it's doesn't go as plan.

for me, when people seeing me hiking nude they will ask like what do you doing? why you are naked? or so..
and yeah, i need to explain, and that's i like naked outside much..

thanks god so far i have no problem with that, although some people can be misunderstanding too..

Some years ago in Glacier Park, I was hiking on a trail and came to an alpine lake. Across the lake were some people on the shore nude. I took off my clothes and was going to continue when a group came along of mostly kids. I got dressed again and went back, as there was a warning for grizzly bears and too many people for me. I didn't know at the time that nudity is allowed in national parks, oh well maybe next time.

I was visiting Eureka California and decided to find a nice stretch of beach to hike. Coming from the puritan Midwest, I wasn't considering naked hiking. Then a man and his dog walk by, both naked without a concern in the world.
Is this a nude beach? I asked.
If you want it to be, he replied.
Off came the clothes in a heartbeat.
I for one love being naked, but I just want to enjoy it and not give any thought of being caught by anything other than insects and UV rays.

can't speak for california but here in georgia i've been caught a few times hiking nude , once two women i was far back in a remote trail but got turned around and ended up on a more used trail and maybe 25 feet from two ladies hiking one had a conniption the other sorta laughed i did apologize and told them i was a nudist and preferred hiking nude and probably the saving grace i didn't have a erection and i'm pretty small anyways . the calm one told her friend to relax it not like you haven't seen a guy nude have you , we talked a few minutes again the calm on was curious i told her about some of the nudist camps in the area and had to elaborate to the other why i wasn't hiking there instead finally we parted ways . once at the same park i had hiked the back country and came out on a horse trail well horse and people trail i was still nude and didn't want to dress yet as i walked toward the front where i would slip on my shorts before entering to parking area , i had walked maybe a hundred yards or so and was getting ready to stop and put my shorts on when a dozen or so mountain bikers (bicycles) came around the bend i literally had to jump out of the way as they flew by - all i could hear was "hey he's naked " and giggles and laughter . been caught a few times at camp i use to belong to there was a powerline at the rear of camp sometime out of boredom i would exit out a rear gate and walk the backroad that ran under the powerline usecd by maintenance crews and would come up on some of the crews working , they apparently knew of the nudist camp and would just say hi as i walked by , i know inside camp power crews , telephone and even delivery people would pop in . one time the owner was installing a brick wall by the pool area i showed up saw a crew delivering the brick i got nude and walk past them everyone was clothed even the owner and his helper it was cool being the only one nude.

I was caught hiking nude just outside Aspen,Co. a couple of mountain bikers rode by really quick they just looked at me and kept riding. I was on another trail on the other side of the same valley and covered up when I saw a few people coming along. I think they saw me they just smiled and walked past me.
