Hi ya'll, I was wondering if anyone would be willing to share insight about nude hiking experiences on public trails, particularly in the California area. What was the general reception like to your being caught unclothed? Did the people you bump into along the way seem to mind? What are your strategies for mitigating encounters and preventing any incidents from occurring?

Couple times when I lived in Chicago I was seen by dog walkers or a cyclist on the trail in the woods, most stopped to look so I did too. Usually they said hello or good morning or just smiled and waved as they passed by. Never anything uncomfortable for either of us, so it was a good experience. Was chased down once by a woman on horseback which was pretty scary. She didn't seem like she was interested in small talk.

Out here I've had a few close calls with dirt bikers out in the wash but they never got close enough I think to see anything.

Did get caught the other day after sunset when leaving the bay to trek home. I thought there's no chance of anyone heading outbound that late and if they were, their torch would give them away in time for me to don my long polo which was in my hand.

As it turned out a couple of guys were heading out to the bay in the dark, they were too close when I noticed their torch and my donning was not cleanly executed. They just laughed as I described the failure of my plan while trying to find the second armhole! May as well have walked calmly past them without any evasive action.

Pre-dawn was much more successful. No encounters on the trail and the added assurance of breaking through many spiderwebs to confirm I was first along for the day. Walkers from the other end didn't start to appear until just after sunrise, apart from the odd surfer, but I generally treat them as a separate species anyway for my purposes.

Didn't get caught hiking. But my wife and I got caught on a backpacking trip once. We had been backpacking (not nude) for roughly 7 miles and had stopped because it was getting dark and we needed to set up our camp. We setup just off the trail in an area right next to the river. We cooked supper and relaxed while night settled in. About an hour or so after dark we decided that since nobody had walked by on the trail since before dark we were probably safe to strip down and bathe in the river. So we stripped and washed off the days sweat and grime. Afterwards, we decided to stay naked and enjoy the campfire. We stoked the fire up nice and big so it would toast our naked bodies. After 30 or 40 minutes of standing by the fire completely naked, we hear something moving. It was a guy who was trail running with a headlamp. Neither my wife or myself had time to react to him running down the trail, so we just stood there completely nude... cock, tits, pussy and asses hanging in the breeze. He waved as he ran by. My wife and I burst out laughing as soon as he was out of sight. We were both so turned on by getting caught, that we fucked right there in the dirt by the fire. Then we had to take another bath. We didn't put clothes on until the next morning when we started backpacking again. One of my most memorable backpacking trips ever!

I guess "getting caught" is the wrong term, as it implies we're doing something wrong or obscene. A thief gets caught, for example. I would prefer to say "run into others" or "get seen by others" etc.

I have been seen quite a lot of times during naked walks here in Scotland. Never had a negative reaction yet, I'm happy to report. I used to get very worried and nervous about the possibility of being seen, but really do not bother about it so much now.
It's not illegal, it is natural, and it's fun. Others usually smile or say something nice and positive.

If it were clearly not illegal where I live, I would hike nude frequently.

And that's the problem, " clearly" ..while there is no specific offence as being naked in public, the " legality" of it is out of your hands, and in the hands of whoever you may run into, if they decide they are offended, then it becomes an offence, " behaviour likely to cause offence". So it is a bit of a lottery, although I will say having met people several times on walks, I've never had a problem, and I think a lot is to do with how you react, if try and hide or cover up you are conveying the idea that you are doing something wrong, just say good morning and go on your way as if it's perfectly normal,
The other problem is people who get offended, obviously there are things that are universally offensive, such as racism, sexism etc, because there is malicious intent to upset or harm,
Just because some decides that the human body is "offensive" why does that become my problem,
They're offended, so what , nothing happens!!!
I'm offended when I hear boy bands...doesn't mean I have any right to ban them...

Even though I am a practicing Christian, I am offended by praise bands, but apparently most Christians are not.

When we took a hike on Colorado mountain trail that needed 4wd jeep to get to- there was no problem.I put allStopped couple times to talk with other guys who were clothed, but never had any problems. It was like both of us had clothes or both were naked - it was just a conversation.

Never in California, only Arizona. I've almost been caught a few times, but I've been fortunate to hear people coming which gives me a chance to become decent enough with shorts. Short 3-5" inseam running shorts is not too far off from nude...but I always try to be considerate of others and their experience in nature

Great report nakeddbird. This morning I was hiking nude with a friend. Its not too far from a populated area but a trail not much used. I mentioned that once youre out there nude for a while its easy to forget that youre out of sync with most of society and you lose the alert reaction. Friend agreed. Glad you had such a comfortable reaction. I am more on alert when hiking solo than with others. I think it may be less concerning to someone you might meet.

Deep creek or where? Always looking for more. Done deep creek several times. Even got some others to hike out free after they saw me hike in. We talked in the pools helping their idea to do so. They appeared happy with the choice when they passed me. More encouraged and enjoyed.

Its always recommended to carry a sarong or towel or wrap...
I did go naked hiking in Thailand on a naturist camp. We did encounter textiles in the woods and were expected to cover up - they didn't show much surprise however... (Also encountered plenty of bugs and sharp branches/twigs that you might not have noticed with your delicates covered.)

I've hiked nude in Ocala National Forest several times. The first time, I tried to cover up with a pair of shorts everytime I heard someone or saw someone. The first ones had already noticed before and said they didn't like the rabbit jumping off the path. I took that to mean they had wished I hadn't covered up.
The next hike, I met a couple of women at the fork in the trail. By then, I didn't bother to cover up. They stopped and we had a conversation about the trail and where it led. Then they asked if there was anything interesting on the part of the trail I had just come down. I told them I was the only thing interesting in that direction.
We continued chatting for about 20 minutes, with their eyes glancing down quite frequently. I plan to hike there again in April
I love being nude outdoors, so nude walks in the country is a great way to achieve this. I do usually try to pick areas where you dont tend to come across many other people, but it does happen sometimes. It isnt technically illegal to just be naked in public in England so i usually just carry on as i am in just my shoes. Some people will say hello, others may want to chat a little longer. Im sure it is easier for a nude woman or couple than say a single guy.
More power to your elbow, your last sentence is so very true, I don't see it ever changing either.

I think that the term "caught" is missed used in this context. I would suggest that better term would be encounter. As someone who has hiked nude for decades i have had hundreds of encounters, with only one of tose that I would consider to be negative. That was during a group Solstice hike on the AT in VT. The first of the group who were a couple of the women and a male meet a middle aged female through Hiker, who didn't approve of the lack of clothing. When I encounter others hiking I greet them with a friendly hello etc.. As for being "caught" I have been caught in the rain while hiking nude.
I think that the term "caught" is missed ...
Agreed, the term "caught" is often used, as if we were being bad. It's not just in this context but in general. This is not a hand-in-the-cookie-jar event, it is, as well noted, an encounter with a textile who may or may nto approve. When I first started freehiking, I kept shorts handy and would scramble to get dressed. Then I realized that I was not in the wrong (except in places where it is expressly illegal) and I didn't need to jump around on one foot while I tried to put on shorts. These days, weather permitting, I hike naked where it's accepted and with a kilt where it's not.
