Lakeman221Oct 2, 2021I'd want a bun with mustard on it and shredded sharp cheddar cheese on top. If chili is available, that can make them even better.

ManOfWicklowNov 17, 2022Bun with lots of onion and ketchup.

Tom DNov 18, 2022
Neither dog or bun....Yuk...You know how much crap is in a hot dog?
I guess you have never had scrapple. It is a food local to SE PA and nearby NJ where they take the parts of the pig that didn't make it into the hot dogs, mix it with cornmeal and fry it.ReactReply - TO
TomApr 2, 2023I dunno AZ - exactly what "crap" are you referring to - please tell me
ReactReply - MEMemberApr 2, 2023
I dunno AZ - exactly what "crap" are you referring to - please tell me
Look into the ingredients of what goes in hotdogs...Just look at the label! Hot dogs are made from the emulsified meat trimmings of chicken, beef, or pork. This meat mixture is blended with other ingredients (like preservatives, spices, and coloring) into a batter-like substance. The emulsified meat is then stuffed into casings, which are typically made from processed collagen or collagen from animal intestines.ReactReply

Per the original question, I enjoy my hotdogs with a good bun, light mayonnaise spread on both sides, a small spread of mustard & ketchup on opposite sides, onions & relish lightly added to both sides and if lucky, folded shut. Sometimes, it is a mouthful. =)

"Kosher Beef, Water, Contains 2% or Less of: Salt, Spice, Sodium Lactate, Paprika, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Garlic Powder, Sodium Diacetate, Sodium Erythorbate, Flavoring, Sodium Nitrite."
And I prefer mine on a bun with horseradish mustard, sweet relish and chopped onion.ReactReply - TD

HawkApr 3, 2023I discovered the red casing type while living in Maine, and yes with a bun. However, Mainers believe that is a disgrace to put mustard or ketchup on a hot dog. They do, put all kinds of other toppings on it, such as baked beans, coleslaw, etc, etc, etc. I have to say they do taste better that it sounds as it opened up my palate to something different and new. DrewJul 5, 2023I try to be low carb, but I do enjoy the bun now and then
Which do you enjoy more
ReactReply - MEMemberJul 13, 2023
Try Carbonaught hot dog buns. Almost no net carbs. Tastes great. They also make hamburger buns, bagels and sandwich bread.

HalfJul 13, 2023I love a good "dawg", in a bun with nothing more than ketchup. Unfortunately I can't eat them anymore - they're loaded with sodium and nitrates.

BillJul 13, 2023I love grilling in the buff!
We've gotten stuck on Oscar Mayer Smokies in the last couple of years, with a ton of good flavor but without much in the way of nitrites and no HF corn syrup, that nasty crap ~ pretty heavy on the salt-cicle status with 450 mg per sausage, but whattayagunnado? There's also some MSG for those susceptible to its effects, so beware.
My anaconda don't want none if it ain't got buns, hun ~ and toast those buns on the grill for us, thank you!

Sodium isn't really an issue unless you have kidney problems. I've had several doctors tell me that salt does NOT cause HBP. I was on a sodium restricted diet thinking it would help. Labs showed dangerously LOW sodium levels and the doc told me to knock it off and stop worrying about salt. Sugar is what you really need to worry about.

I prefer with bun and sauerkraut

RodJun 22, 2024It depends on a few things. If I'm enjoying a naked day on my deck and need to grill in order to have something to do while I burn my back and watch the neighbor lady mow her lawn, I put cheddar brats on. I burn the f out of them and eat them one by one with a fork right off the grill.
If I'm grilling some quality dogs because there are soft and loverly buns, a bowl of good chili, and a bowl of chopped onions around, I will make coneys and eat as many as I can without ... well ... you know.ReactReply - MB
Mike but also go by Koch (coach)Jul 8, 2024Bun or no bun, however it shows up to dinner.
