Why Not Nude?

In the last two years we have visited a dozen nudist/clothing optional resorts in the eastern quarter of the U.S. The overwhelming majority of guests are nude only at the pools. At dinners and dances some males are nude, but very few females. We just had dinner (nude) with 45 other diners at a prominent Florida resort and there were two other nude diners. The temperature outside was 80, so weather wasn't an issue. Looking for resorts where this isn't common.
The "nude" cruise is where we expected everyone to be nude most of the time (dinner excluded).  We read about people hardly waiting for the announcement that the shore officials were off the boat and it was time to get naked.  The reality wasn't quite that way.  The 2016 cruise was on a Celebrity ship and that upscale line provided two bathrobes per cabin.  Basically, the ship looked like a floating geriatric ward!  It got so bad that Barry put up signs at the theater entrances saying "no bathrobes".  They were largely ignored.  (Carnival is hosting the cruise for the next two years and I don't believe they provide robes.)  The pool deck was really the only place onboard where the majority were nude most of the time.  After dinner, we dumped our clothes and went nude to the shows and then to the lounges and we were definitely in the minority.
We had robes in 2013 on the Carnival Freedom. The only time I saw lots of robes that cruise was the last night down by the Atrium bar. Some kind of tradition we heard about, so we joined in. We did hear there were lots at the shows in the theater, but we don't really go to the theater that often on cruises. In 2015 (same ship as 2016), I don't remember that many bathrobes at all, but I guess it depends on where you are on the ship. We were at the aft bar on the Lido deck as we were sailing out of port, and there were a few getting naked while we were still in the Ft. Lauderdale channel, before any announcement could have come. We did go to the theater for the comedian in 2015 and saw some robes, but there were nude folks as well. Both were the minority to those who were dressed. I'm with you, the clothes come off right after dinner before we head to the nightclub. We generally skip the shows and get some pool/hot tub time before the dances start.
Looking for resorts where this isn't common.
Well, LOTW in IN is one. The last time I posted we hadn't been there yet. After a couple of trips to LOTW, my wife decided to "give up" her sarong and instead choose to get naked and lock up her clothes right after checking in; after getting comfortable with the fact that nearly everyone went nude there - and figuring she might as well do the same. People there, by a wide margin, do choose to stay naked "after hours." If it's a bit chilly you might see a sarong or two; and my wife might choose to pull her cover-up out of the car. But it's a knitted cover-up that she leaves open anyway; as the purpose is to stay warm and not to "hide." In my opinion is that it is "as it should be"; but I do understand that not everyone is into staying naked that long into the day/night. That's why there are C/O resorts.
I'm naked as much as possible. Even with my compulsion for being nude, it can get chilly enough to have to slip on something for warmth.
Same here, Andy. I will stay naked until I'm literally shivering. I think of it as "dedication" rather than "obsession" lol!!

As far as "after hours" coverage, I certainly would not tell people what to wear or how to wear it. I would simply ask what their choice of garment is communicating to others. Because in my experience, just a couple of women (or men) wrapped up might cause other people to hesitate staying naked; and before long only the more dedicated nudists (which are usually fewer) are the only ones nude. And they then become the "odd ones" rather than the "normal ones." It doesn't make sense for nudists to feel "out of place" staying naked at a nudist venue.

Liz became aware of this fact during a stay at a nudist B&B last year. We were first for breakfast, and one woman came up wearing a long chemise. And it gave her pause; making her feel as if she perhaps shouldn't be nude at the table either. The woman eventually took off her chemise, as she herself did not want to be the only person fully covered while everyone else was nude.
With the understanding that if she received that signal, she might send the same signal herself, Liz specifically set out to shop for a cover-up that could keep her warm while being minimally covered. She came up with a cover-up similar to the link below; except she will leave it open. That way she is keeping warm while sending the "signal" that she is still very much "pro-naked."

Again I would never tell what people can and can't wear. There are many options out there besides Liz's crochet cover-up. It's just a thought.

I'm sorry it took me this long to see this thread. We live in Ivor at White Tail Resort, and yes, clothing optional isnothow we do it here. I have heard it was a vote by the board here to be a nudist resort and we are very, very glad. There are still some members who don't adhere to the policy strictly, but we are a live & let live sort. Even when it's too warm for such covering, you'll see the errant person wearing something away from their home, rental unit or campsite. It's so silly. We're the polar opposite of that action at our household, sometimes even when the polar temperatures are in control. Not today though! We love December weather like this, sixties all week during the day, yay!! Why do some still feel they have a right to wear something here, a place specifically for nudism? Be it stubbornness, self-absorption, forgetfulness (the average age member here is getting up there), it happens, but the bare butts rule the roost and we've got no worry about that fact changing, ever. We've been described as more of a drinking resort with a nudism problem - butt that ain't no problem. Double negatives aside, bring your vanilla Crown Royal and join us! Please leave your clothes in the car unless it's the weather, and keep a towel for your tushy handy.

For overnight or extended stays, I think a lot of people like to check-in dressed, then carry their stuff to their rental BEFORE getting naked. That's also how my wife and I do it. After all, if we're going to be naked there for several days, what's the big rush?

Seeing you mention the jeep reminded me. Have you tried driving the jeep with clothing roof and doors all off for the ultimate experience?

    by AndyDi:
A lot of things I was doing to prove some idea that being and naked and reckless was somehow making me more a nudist than the next guy, it was really not really proving anything.
Yes. Do it for yourself if you wish but, like you said, it doesn't make your more of less of a nudist. I occasionally enjoy challenging myself but it doesn't necessarily mean anything beyond that except, perhaps, for a good story to share on TN. :-)
There are almost always stops at various places along the way from home to our destination. Clothes on and off and back on isn't worth it.
Yep. Shirts aren't to bad, I imagine dresses are close but shorts (or worse, jeans) push the hassle factor up, especially for short distances. Longer distances are more attractive!

Shirts are even easier because, at least for males, there are very few places where you can't get out of the car first and put it on afterwards.

I've only really done it when going to and from the beach, although a (night) drive in my new-old Miata is on the bucket list. At least the summer weather appears to be kicking-in now where I am.

Shirtless is not really a thing here, but perhaps I'm just not looking around enough. :-)

At my local club, the restaurant is only open during the summer months. Most people eat by the pool fully nude. The only club I have been to with a true dining room is Mira Vista. When I did eat there, I was nude but most came dressed. Same with the bar at night. Most were dressed when they arrived but some undressed sometime during the evening.

It didnt bother me. I was just glad that no one cared that I was nude.

I don't like to wear more clothing than necessary and shirts aren't necessary in cars or most outdoor locations in warm weather. I also walk, bike and do most of my warm weather yard work shirtless. I don't put one on at home for tradesman, delivery people or frequent visitors.

I could see that some may think it's more hygienic, but that's perception rather than reality, if expect. Would you hands necessarily be cleaner because you're chose to wear clothes? Not necessary so! I can see how others may feel that though.

If an area is CO, why not take advantage of it? :-)

I wonder the same about the guys who keep their Speedos on at the CO beach. They could confidently wear them at any beach in Australia, even if other countries may be more conservative. Perhaps it's the vibe of the location they enjoy, perhaps they like to check out the less-dressed others, and maybe the males on balance, given all the cues. I continue to strip at the sign (or perhaps on the wrong side of it) partly as a statement of dedication of exercising the option in CO.

However, I understand why some people wear something to a nude beach that would not be allowed on most other beaches, in the US, bottom only for women or g strings for either gender.
I occasionally enjoy challenging myself but it doesn't necessarily mean anything beyond that except, perhaps, for a good story to share on TN. :-)
Personal "nudist challenges" can also be a tool for personal development and positive influence.

I've talked before about my days going to Bell Acres, and observing that while I was there, almost everyone checking in dressed. I asked the manager - with whom I had developed a rapport - if it was actually resort policy. She told me that it actually wasn't; it simply had become common practice. So I asked her if I could just check in naked; and she said she didn't see a reason not to. So the next time I came, I did exactly that; left my clothes in the car and walked in the office naked (with my then-wife). I can't say that we started a trend; but I did notice that after that I started seeing more people undressing in the parking lot and checking in naked too.

And then some personal challenges didn't work for me. For example driving nude. I personally didn't feel it added anything to my nudist experience. But that's just me. And at least I know because I tried it. I would still recommend anyone try it and find out for themselves.

The "extended nudity" my wife Liz and I frequently practice was a result of Liz setting a personal challenge for herself. We'd be doing day trips for a while, and she wanted to see what effect having no option of covering up for a day or two would have on her confidence. So we went to a nudist B&B for 3 days. What was supposed to be an experiment for her turned into the realization that after a day or two naked, she wasn't even thinking about clothes anymore. Which had a tremendous positive impact on our nudist life, as she transitioned from a C/O preference to an "all nude" preference.

Anyway, my point is that challenges can be meaningful. I think the key is to not fall into the "trap' of compulsive challenges; which sometimes are more about "competition" or even "thrill seeking" than personal development. My first wife Shelly would sometimes "do things", like walking naked from the car into the house (we parked on the street) after riding home naked from the resort. Sure it was dark...but she was still naked walking through our front yard! It was a short phase in her life - but I think her proving her "naked confidence" wasn't necessary in that manner. Just my opinion.

They get left in the room after we settle in.

We'll get dressed again if we have dinner plans in town; but otherwise we are naked whenever on the premises.

If it's chilly in the morning or evening my wife will put on a short Turkish bathrobe; but then she leaves it completely open. At the dinner table she'll slip it off to eat with our hosts/other guests. But otherwise, it's naked the entire time we're there. Except for the short stroll between our car after parking and the house.
And then some personal challenges didn't work for me. For example driving nude. I personally didn't feel it added anything to my nudist experience. But that's just me. And at least I know because I tried it. I would still recommend anyone try it and find out for themselves.
That was a challenge for me. Whatever kind of challenge it was at the start, it left me understanding that I enjoy it best when I can roll the windows down and enjoy the airflow at freeway speeds. In traffic and with pedestrians around I enjoy keeping my little secret to myself (mostly) while being within their midst. It's somewhat a part of the trip to the CO beach. A trip to another destination does not have me automatically thinking about that option. Doing it in my convertible is less fun due to the heightened risk of being seen, but I probably need to explore that option more and see how it can work for me. Trying to walk in local parklands after dark was a challenge at first, but even on the first attempt became an enjoyable experience for its own sake, only with the proviso that I try to avoid running into anyone not expecting it.
Anyway, my point is that challenges can be meaningful. Perhaps by going closer than usual to that streetlight at the end of the parkland trail. Usually it's in my choice of attire between the carpark and the CO section of the beach. Thong through a busy carpark as a male? Sarong-as-a-toga with nothing beneath? Tan-through fabrics, even if the metal shines through? Nude for a part of the trail on the 'wrong' sauce of the sign? All fun, even if it's nothing more than that.

IMO the more simple nudity is practiced the more natural becomes. Learning to just BE clothes free as a natural part of everyday life can be liberating when it evolves from being challenge to just being.

When you leave all your clothes behind and take a chance on being vulnerable, it can be extremely rewarding in terms self-acceptance. It's ok if it's a bit of a struggle. Because it's through the struggle that we grow. Once fear has been dealt with; that's when true freedom manifests itself. It's worth it.
I have practice nudity for sometime and it has became very natural and I have no problem in getting naked where it is acceptable. I have been to a clothing optional resort and get naked once inside. It puzzles me when I see some of the guys wearing jock straps while laying around the pool with other guys that are totally naked. I understand that its clothing optional but nudity is the main reason for many that are there who are looking for a safe place to exercise their freedom in being naked.
Since there are very few places where a male can wear a jock or thong in public, maybe they are exercising their freedom to wear less than they can elsewhere, even if they are not nude.

There may be a reluctant partner at a CO beach or resort, while its generally the woman who is less eager to get naked, we have seen the reverse quite a few times.

Often at the beach we would see a nude woman walking with a dressed male, he only stripping when they found a place to settle. Only once have we encountered a reluctant male at a resort, his wife was naked everywhere all the time, but he would only get naked once he was at the pool. The fact that he was English and his wife German may have been a factor.

I go to Gunnison frequently and see more clothed women with nude men than the other way around. I do remember one incident where a couple set up near me and she stripped nude and he stayed in long board shots. I was nude as usual when I am there. We got talking and I found out that she had just asked him if he wanted to go to the beach, without telling him it was clothing optional. He did eventually drop the shorts.
