Choosing to be nude in exam room before your doctor arrives

  Never fully nude with just brief on, but have not felt obligated to wear the gown. At my last visit I just said it gets in the way and is always falling off. If you are instructed to strip to your shorts it would be prudent to do just that. If you never wear shorts it would be wise to let them know that as well.

  Same here.
  That is why I decided to wear underwear to doctor's appointments where I expect to be asked to strip to my underwear even though I never wear it otherwise.

  It has 'a little' to do with nudism. As a nudist, I'm nude whenever possible and where it's allowed. In this case I've always felt that, these are doctors/ nurses and they know the human body, so it should be a patient's choice to undress if they want. As long as the undressing is necessary for the kind of ailment you're there for. I'm not going to undress fully if I have the flu & need a shot. A check up, yes or anything I need to show them that needs attention in personal areas. I've even undressed for a prostate exam. Makes sense to me. (If the O.P. is enjoying this....you're weird.)

  only undress if asked to do so. the urologist or dermatologist when he is doing an annual body check for moles etc. primary and cardiologist haven't requested that I undress

  Agree with most. As a Physician Assistant, I would be surprised to walk in to see a pt already undressed. Take the cues from the nurse after she gets your vitals. She will tell you whether to remove clothing or not. And likely since you're there for ED the urologist will eventually do a genital check on you anyway. Keep everything on until you are told otherwise. And I'm saying this YES, as a nudist.

  I struggled with this at my dermatologist office. One doctor seemed upset with nudity, so I stopped seeing him and switched to another in the same group. When the PA was getting my info, I just told her that I was a nudist, and spend a lot of time outside naked, so I need everything looked at. She said she'd let the doctor know, and told me to get undressed, which I did. They have you cover up with a large paper towel, but I was otherwise naked. When the new doctor came in, he introduced himself, immediately scolded me for spending too much time in the sun, then asked me what country had the most tolerance for nudity. I answered Germany, and he said that's right. We had a nice discussion about the hypocrisy of the American attitude toward nudity while he looked me over. He gave me another stern warning about using sunscreen and demanded that I always wear a hat, then told me to come back in 12 months. That was 4 years ago, and I've gone back every year. I think the best way to handle this is just be up front and let them know. If it's a problem, find another doctor.

  Always. My health care provider knows that I am a nudist. The lack of any tanlines dispels any doubts. She is very comfortable examining all aspects of my body. As a nudist I need a thorough check for any signs of possible skin cancer.

Doctor's appointments and most occasions that call for business casual or better are the only times I wear underwear, even when clothed.

  When I go to the dermatologist for a skin scan they ask that I strip to my underwear. My doctor does a thorough job looking every where but doesn't spend much time on my butt or genitals (just a second or two). I think I should tell her that they are exposed to the sun often but so far have not said anything. Has anyone else experienced the same feelings?

  If it calls for undressing I always do. When Dr comes in I'm nude, he never says anything about it. A couple times nurse has come back in

  I accidentally did this once. I know what youre thinking, accidentally? How the hell does that happen? Well, I dont normally wear underwear and it was a warm summer day, I was running late so I just threw on my shorts and was out the door. Normally I would wear underwear for the doc and didnt realize what Id done until I was sitting in the waiting room. So after the nurse took me in, did her prelims, she told me to strip down and the doc would be in shortly. Well, I figured since my doctor had seen me naked before for the hernia exams, I just got naked and waited. When the doc came in he was visibly surprised and I apologized and explained that I had been running late and forgot to put on underwear. He understood but suggested I put my shorts back on. The rest of the exam was normal but Ive never forgotten my underwear since.

  My primary doctor never has me take anything off.
  The urologist has me strip below the waist for my exam.
  For the cardiologist I find it more comfortable to take my shirt off for the EKG instead of bunching it up under my armpits so I just leave it off for the exam.
  The dermatologist has me strip to my underwear and the cautiously pulls it aside one area at a time.
  I have considered "forgetting" my underwear for this exam since I rarely wear any but I suspect he would be uncomfortable if I did so.

  I have been nude at my doctor office for a full exam it was no big deal. He is a friend and knows I am a nudist and that I am comfortable being nude. Even his nurse Is ok with it. A couple of time when they had A group of student nurses in the office they asked if it was ok for them to be in the room for my full exam I said I was ok with me so he did a full nude exam in front of 6 Nursing . I never wear underwear so even If I see a different doctor/ specialist when I put on a gown and they say keep on your underwear I will always say I dont were any I have never had any one care either way. Its even happened when I was getting x-rayed they needed me to remove my short to x-Ray my lower back but keep on my underwear as I always tell them I dont wear any on female giggled and said nether dose her boyfriend and said she was ok with it. I have found its no big deal to them they are professional and have seen a lot of patience in all stages of undress.

  Despite living in one of the more liberal towns in my state, PAs at my doctor's practice sometimes flip out at the thought of even taking off my shirt for an EKG. However, at my last visit, a new nurse was trying (unsuccessfully) to stick an electrode through the hair and getting pretty frustrated. When I asked if it would make things easier if I took off the shirt and we shaved a patch, she breathed a huge sigh of relief. When the doc came in, he just nodded and asked if we could do the rest of the exam so he didn't have to use a stethoscope through a shirt. I've never offered or been asked to take off anything more, though.

  Like so many things, not every situation is the same and actions vary. A few years ago I was seeing a new physician for my annual exam and it so happened that this doctor was a relatively young female. I was fully clothed as she asked a number of questions and did some basic eyes and ears things. When it was time to listen to my chest, she asked a bit nervously for me to take off my shirt and wanted to know if I would like to put on a gown. I explained that I found them very awkward, to which she agreed. At which point, I said to myself, what the hell, and told her I was a nudist and would be more comfortable just being naked as necessary. Shortly thereafter it was time for a rectal, so now Im completely nude. She joked about having small fingers and from there on we developed a great rapport. Now Im always nude in the examing room before she arrives. We chat, she does whatever is necessary and chat some more.

  Yea, I wouldn't strip off before the doc arrives or asks me too. That just sounds like exhibitionism. Now, I do get an annual physical where he gives me the silly paper blanket and I need to be nude for a proper check. That blanket never gets used. I'm not shy or a prude.

  I also recently needed an ultrasound on my legs to look for blood clots. The tech asked me to strip to my underwear. I told her I went commando and that I was not shy in any way and was a nudist and that if she was ok I was ok. She stated she was so happy to hear that. She was so used to puritans and their garments and silly ideas getting in the way of her doing her job.
