Last week I was on a ship of the same company. There was a sign that all men entering the sauna had to be 18 or older (which I can understand, even though I don't fully agree. It can be noisy with children in there). But now bathing suits had to be worn at all times! I thought it was completely stupid, especially when it's a sauna exclusively for men. Some men took off their swimming trunks anyway, wearing their towel around their waist. But anyway... Has public opinion about nudity changed this much in only 5 years?! That's a terrible conclusion. What do you think?

J.Sep 13, 2015I don't think it is health regulations, since on the Bare Necessities cruises the saunas can be used nude. And these cruises are on the regular US-based cruise lines. For Bare Necessities either sex can use either sauna, even though as Fernando said they are in the men's and women's locker rooms.ReactReply - JO

What do you think? [/quote] I used to work as a towel boy in a men's only spa - I was always surprised by how many the customers would get through. They'd come up to me and thump a sopping towel on the counter and ask for a new one - I'd ask how the towel got so wet and their answer, invariably, was that they'd worn it in the steam room. When I then told them that we recommended nudity in there, they would be surprised! I'm young, but even I know that the steam room is a place for complete relaxation - it seemed to me that low confidence comes hand in hand with the textile lifestyle...ReactReply - BU

I travelled a couple of times with Costa, italian cruising company.
They have also men only sauna in the locker room. There is a sign
that wearing swimwear is obligatory but the guys there are mostly
naked,as they do at the showers as well.ReactReply - NU

I grew up on military bases, and they all had gyms with saunas and sometimes they had steam rooms, too. All men and boys of all ages, as long as they were military or were a military dependent, they could use them, and everyone was always nude. I imagine it was the same on the women's side of the gym. I can't imagine wearing clothes, and these were my first nudist experiences.
As a swimming coach and lifeguard at the bases' recreation departments, I had access to the base pools after hours, and I often hung out at the base pool and even community pools (in town) nude when they were closed.
I would love to cruise with Bare Necessities. I'm going to have to see if my travel company that I currently represent will book official trips with them.ReactReply - FRFreecospiritDec 28, 2015All cruise lines are different. Some have mixed saunas / steam rooms where costumes are mandatory. Some charge extra for the use of use these facilities. When the facilities are single sex, free or charged, just do as you feel comfortable with. In the sauna I lie / sit naked on a towel. In steam rooms using a towel is not practical so I'm simply naked. I do walk round between the sauna, steam room and shower naked just carrying the towel. Some may choose to clothed, most are naked, but that is their choice just as being nude is your choice.

[/quote]That was not the point I was trying to make: less than 5 years ago you could be naked in the sauna of Costa cruises, this Summer there was a sign that you had to wear bathing suits. So my question is: what happened in less than 5 years to see nudity suddenly as a taboo? All men had no problem with nudity five years ago. My last gym was quite bizarre, it had a sauna in the male changing room, and gang showers (rather than cubicles) so you would be naked with up to 8 others. If you wanted to use the sauna, you were required to wear shorts, so potentially you'd taking them on and off while going from sauna to shower! Hmmm, this is a Friday night, as i look on the clothes rack and see a black bikini! I grab a towel, hang my robe up and open the door. the Sauna is big, 20x20ft, two couples, three men, four women.

ChrisJan 29, 2017I was on a cruise in 2004 and as I was getting undressed I still had my underwear on taking my watch off and the attendant said excuse me but nudity is required in the spa area.... I said you really have to tell people that?? This is a male locker room and spa.... when I took my underwear off and he saw I had no tan lines he laughed and said I see you enjoy the sun with out hang ups lol

BobMay 17, 2017You are absolutely right. It seems that acceptable nudity has changed in some places over the past few years. I always am nude in the sauna area on ships, and have not seen any changes (Carnival line). I hope it stays that way, but if I see a sign changing it, I will continue on the way I have.
I did notice the change in gyms. I have tried different ones here in Canada, and the one run by our town is the most laid back and accepting. The larger chains are either cover up, or guys looking for more than a sauna.

Not sure if it's a cruise ship issue or just men's desire to be nude. I grew up in the 60's and we were required to shower after gym class. This started in junior high in my case. I remember at first trying to skip the shower but the following day the gym teacher mentioned the names of those who didn't shower. Later I did as they told us and was a bit embarrassed being nude in front of other guys. It's the age when most go through puberty; some with some hair, a thick pelt or nothing at all. I was a late bloomer but over time I got over it and no longer had any problems with it. From that point onward I had no problem being nude in the presence of other guys.
There is a point when the schools no longer required showers after gym class; not sure what year that happened but that's the reason for the differing opinions about nudity in the locker room.

i have been on a few cruises and they have men only locker room,steam and sauna..and found that most guys like to go nude in those areas but not everyone some wear a swim suit ..i normally sit on a towel naked when i use the steam and sauna !! i recently been on the royal Caribbean line ovation of the seas and the ship has a mens locker room only but you cant go nude in steam and sauna as its unisex!!!

The Voyager of the Seas has a sign that says something about dressing appropriately. Nude is appropriate for a sauna. Swimsuits are a problem since people have often been in the spa and pools, and the chlorine comes out in the sauna. Boardshorts are even worse. The sign also said it was 18 years and older. I didn't mind when fathers brought their sons in, so long as they were well behaved. But I wasn't going to cover up just because buys were there. There was never an issue, and never a complaint.ReactReply - WA
WayneApr 12, 2018On the Diamond Princess they have a full Japanese bathhouse, including open air baths, where nudity is mandatory. I was a daily visitor, and always enjoyed my naked time. Wish more ships had this facility. I now try to cruise on the Diamond Princess whenever possible.

The costs of extras is so daunting that we have not used the spa so as much as I would like some nude time I cannot say what the situation is. Just seems to be that everything even down to bottled water comes at an unbelievably high extra cost Even when you prepay gratuities they automatically add an extra 20percent for gratuity and leave space for you to add more.ReactReply
