Hello i am 18 and new to the whole nudist thing and i recently joined the YMCA on a year long membership.
My question is about the locker room and the sauna room.
1. The Locker Room why do people find issue with me undressing in public mostly people my own age i find it annoying that they freak out calling me gay (which im not) just because im comfortable wth my body and such so is it not appropriate to do that?
2. The sauna room i went in the first day i joined and there were nothing but naked older men i felt like a lack sheep in my towel, should i just let it all fly the next time i go?

- MIMicJonesJul 14, 2013I've been to many Y's in many different cities. I've never seen it where guys cover up. Every place I've ever been, you always see nude guys in the locker rooms.
There are a couple that I go to now. One is an older Y that has a huge locker room. There are two saunas, and steam rooms. A nice big whirlpool that almost everyone uses nude. The y has a towel service so towels aren't an issue and you still see guys walking around without them. I used to live in a location where then mens lockerroom had gang showers and steam room... nude was not a big deal. When they added an addition lockers were added with stall showers and private changing rooms attached. Luckily they kept the old lockers as well.ReactReply

MitchJan 4, 2014The gym I go to now has no rules posted about nudity. The closest thing they do state is that you should wear shorts or have a towel in the sauna.
When I go to the sauna, I usually let the situation dictate how nude I get. In other words, if I am alone, I just sit there on my towel. If others are there and they are covered up or dressed, I will just wrap the towel around my waist.
If someone is there that is nude and sitting on their towel, I will do likewise, as I will be more comfortable and perhaps they won't feel like a lone nude person.

Maybe next time I will wear my brazillian bikini which barely covers my backside!
The Y is not human friendly at all anymore. Since becoming COED, they have all become totally PARANOID about partial nudity, let alone full nudity. They are creating an image that the human body is to be covered at all times and is disgracefull when unclothed. I wish I was born 10 - 15 years earlier before the time of nude paranoia. However, I think that could change if groups like TN could become more visible in the communities and help sponsor nudist camps, resorts, whatever to openly publicize nude camping or recreation and post the benefits. Certainly there is no harm with children seeing adults nude, nore the opposite sex. If anything, it is educational and important for youth to see opposite sex, and see adults of both genders nude as this would reduce sexual hang-ups immensely.
TN, we all must do our part to promote nudity openly and stop hiding behind closed doors. Also, must stop this nonsense of no single males allowed. 1. those who are your age are immature. I am not meaning any disrespect towards you but it sounds like typically school age nonsense. You being naked in the locker room or sauna is/should be acceptable. I am sure that only those in your age bracket are the ones calling you gay.I used to go to the YMCA in Boston when I was in the Navy after the work day ended. There were about 12 guys from my ship that went, but typically only about 6 on any given day. It was a men's only place and you had to be naked to swim in their pool are sit in the sauna. This is back in the 70's. Back then you learned to get over being naked with other boys/men when you went to high school. Our gym teachers used to stand by the gang shower checking off your name when you took a shower. It was intimidating at first, but you got used to it. It was the same for me when I was in school. We all HAD to take showers. Now my kids have gym, weight lifting, etc and go all day without a shower. That's doing nothing but teaching bad hygiene.

It's not their fault, schools have changed a lot of requirements on hygiene. When I was in school, it was mandatory to dress out for gym, and shower before going back to class. really who wants to sit next to someone sweating from gym class. Today, it isn't required to shower anymore.The sauna issue, really depends on the health club. For me, its normal to be nude in the sauna. use a towel to sit on, for obvious reasons. The YMCA, used to be men only, and back in the day swim suits weren't used in the pools either, nude swim.your friends have some obvious hangups about nudityReactReply

JasonAug 2, 2020No one should have an issue with you undressing in the locker room. That's why it's there. So far as the sauna, I used to belong to the Y as well as several other gyms over the years. It seems there is a change of attitude. Years ago it was common to be nude in the sauna, steam room and whirlpool. I noticed about 10 years ago signs popping up that you must wear a suit. I wrap a towel around myself to partially comply. For me, the point of using a sauna or steam room is to allow your pores to open up and sweat. wearing a suit defeats that purpose.

I also noticed this trend at Mohegan Sun one of the casinos in CT. When the spa was renovated new signs went up in the locker rooms that bathing suits were required in the steam room, sauna, and whirlpool. Unlike previous build when nude was accepted preferred. At the time it had me wondering if the trend had changed and if nudism and any form of public nudity would be a thing of the past at least in the US.

I belong to a country club and I find the older men have no issues being nude and will walk freely nude to shave nude or go to the steam room, stand nude by their locker, talk to other men nude, etc. What I also now see is the younger guys seem to be very shy about getting nude. I truly cannot understand that. We are all males, all have the same body and genitals, some might be fat, some skinny, but we are all men. I am never ashamed of my naked body with other nude men. Sad state of affairs for true nudists.

CraigApr 12, 2021You are so right. I was a member at the YMCA for a few years. It was very normal to be nude in the locker room. Most guy walked from their locker to the steam room to the shower and never even covered with the towel.
I joined a regular gym and no one is ever naked in the locker room.

ChuckMarineJun 4, 2021The Y here in Chicago used to be a pick up place for gay and bi men To the point one couldn't change clothes or shower without being hit upon.. They have cleaned it up by imposing the very rules many find too conservative

DerekJun 24, 2021I haven't had a membership to the Y in about 9 years, but the one I went to in Toronto had the locker room, Whirlpool, steam room and dry sauna all connected to each other, so I wold strip naked and wander around for an hour or so every day, enjoying all of these facilities.
I noticed the young guys would try to get in the whirlpool with their underwear on and I wold tell them off for it telling them it was gross, "nobody wants your skid marks in the fucking whirlpool, take your damned underwear off" it worked. however there were also signs up that said the only nude or swimsuits were allowed in the whirlpool.
The point being instead of being shamed for your nudity, instead encourage others to get naked. its a locker room after all.

sunman44Jun 24, 2021Just do what feels comfortable to you. As a self-described old guy, we grew up during a time when showers were required in school after gym class. I played sports so we were all in gang showers. The YMCA only allowed you to swim nude. We learned at an early age that nudity was no big deal. At some point that all changed and nobody showered after gym (ugh) and nudity became sexualized and now I see grown guys struggling to change under a towel. My gym has posted signs that everyone must be covered by a towel in the locker room. So if you are lucky enough to be where you can be nude in the sauna, just enjoy it if you feel so inclined. The old guys wont care and will likely admire your courage.
