  thanks but is it custom to be nude in the sauna?Not having been anywhere near a Y I would not be able to comment on the policies there.  I would suggest that you make enquiries about that with whoever is in charge.  Then you will will know if the nudity you have experienced is officially allowed.  You do not make any comment about if you would be interested in joining them.  If you are you could may be just go with the flow and join in if/when you feel comfortable.

Undressing at the Y in the locker room shouldn't be an issue thats why they call it the locker room, when I went to the Y about a year ago, no one had any problems with dressing and undressing or walking to or from the showers, however I would guess it would depend on where are at geographically, and mind set of the people there... some people are brainwashed on being nude more than others. and some people are more homophobic than other also.. 2. As far as the sauna, the Y I was a member of had a co-ed sauna, so you had to wear shorts/swimsuit (unless you were the only one in there.... There is a huge generation gap between the young and older generation as far as being nude goes,  Just remember the general population is programmed by the media, religion, politics, and view the world like mindless droans unable to make a logical decision. "if someone said it... it  has to be true"

  Please referring to the YMCA I had post in the past.  it sad to see Y, they are requiring us to wearing swimsuite and towel in sauna and whoolpool area and men or boy are taking shower with their short.  that SAD!

  It's really sad the way things have evolved.  Years ago (I'm talking the 80s!) nudity was normal in any locker room.  We changed, walked to the showers and wet area (sauna, steam room, whirlpool) naked and no one ever commented and I don't remember ever seeing guys doing the towel dance.  Nowadays however it's totally different.   I recently went to a club outside of New Orleans and was surprised to see guys showering in their underwear or staying in swimsuits in the sauna/steam rooms.  I went in naked, with a towel, and was told that I had to put something on.  IT WAS A MENS ONLY LOCKER ROOM! And the guy who told me that was at least my age.  I just left.  I gues living in Europe for the last 15 years has spoiled me or something but the US' attitudes toward nudity has certainly caused naturists to go into the closet it seems.

  First off, you shouldn't be concerned whether the locker room is full of "old men" or young guys. That tells me you aren't as comfortable about your nudity as you want us to believe. Forget what others are doing and how old or young they are and just be who you are. Also, as one member suggested, learn the rules at that particular YMCA. If nudity is ok in certain areas but not in others you'll know. Most Y's are pretty liberal about nudity but you don't want to break a rule or offend anyone. As to your friends... when in a group, do as the group does. If they wear clothes or swim trunks then you do likewise. Nothing brings out the beast in people like being the only "different one".

  i don't know if i went to the y or anywhere else if my friends went to shower in his underwear i don't think i would shower in my underwear, when i finish a workout i'm going to get nude and wash off the sweat, if i was in school and others didn't shower they would have to turn the water back on cause i don't want to stink the rest of the day, we are such a screwed up society...

Nothing brings out the beast in people like being the only "different one".[/quote]    Go with the group?  If you are have a strong enough group of friends and you are strong minded yourself then just do what you are going to do.  Do not worry about what others think.  I remember from high school through college I would always shower and I would never do the damned "towel dance."  People tried to make fun of me in high school, but that is where having a mind comes in.  They stunk, I didn't, and I let them know it.  Same thing in college.  There were more guys that showered and didn't care in college than in high school, but you need to do what is right for you and be true to yourself. And regardless of whether you are gay or straight, young or old, why does it matter what the other people look like or do?  You go to the Y for your benefit -- not someone else.

  It is absolutely normal men to shower in gang showers, like in a gym at school naked. In my country it will be very strange if they are not naked there.

  I find it depends on the Y too.  There's one near uptown Charlotte that is far more relaxed with nudity, although they still ask for "modesty".  The Y near my home that I just started going to is very paranoid about it.  There are a lot of guys there that sit in the sauna and steamroom with their underwear on (not swimsuits...underwear...) AND they take a shower in their underwear too.  If you're paranoid about nude that's one thing...but showering in your underwear?

  Years ago I was a member of one of the YMCAs in the New England area. When I joined it they had swims for men and high school boys only and the rule was nylon suits or no suits. Often high school boys would come in from playing basket ball or something in the gym and want to jump into the pool with their gym shorts on. The lifeguard would tell them that gym shorts were not allowed in the pool and they would have to be removed if they wanted to go into the pool. Most of the boys complied and swam nude. I enjoyed the freedom of swimming suit free and took advantage of doing so. Nudity in the locker room, steam room, and sauna was not an issue as nudity was the norm in those areas.  A few years later the Y went co-ed. All swims were coed and suits (of any kind) were required. I was sad because I thought my skinny-dipping days were over. However when I found out about a nudist resort that was not all that far from me I made my first visit and became a member as soon as I could.  Little did I know when I made that visit that it would result in a major change in my life.

  Don't stress it man, these guys are probably jealous that you accept your body and aren't uncomfortable with nudity. I found the tip is just act like nothings different, when I used to go to the Y and a YMCA Camp social nudity was awkward but those feelings quickly went away once we all realized that we all need to shower, and we all need to change, getting undressed was just another step.
  As for nudity in a sauna it all depends what your local Y says, I know at my gym nudity is allowed, but at another gym in the same town you must be covered up with a towel. So find out the facts before you emulate those men.

  Being nude in ANY locker room is normal- it is where you go to change your clothes!
  And the idea of someone showering while wearing underwear? Boggles my mind!
  We are all the same gender in the locker room, and anyone who is afraid to get undressed is obviously homophobic. same goes for the sauna - unless it is co-ed. Nudity is the norm in a sauna, where the idea is to sweat out body toxins, so what is the point of wearing clothing, if the toxins are still going to remain in close contact with your skin?
  Stand up and go with what you believe in, be a true nudist!
  Don't allow the prudes to win something this fundamentally wrong.

Don't allow the prudes to win something this fundamentally wrong.  [/quote]  I've talk to some guys who wear sauna suite at the sauna, those sauna suite suppose to make you sweat more, but on the other hand people need to keep those suite clean if not the suite could become very smell and discussing.  I have seen some member wearing smelly suite inside the sauna.  OMG that stink out the whole sauna and make me throw up!!

  its been years since i last visited the y it was coed except the locker rooms of course but i don't remember a steam or sauna room, i also don't remember many showering but i did but i'm from the old school of junior and senior high where you showered after sweating. it amazes me alot of the youth today male and female walking around with their pants below their ass but won't shower with a group such as schools or the y's.

  I asked one of the guards in the pool once what they would do if someone came out of the locker room NAKED and they said they would ask them to put clothes on.. (Or something like that)

  I have been to the Y and I have been to other gyms. And in all honesty, I've noticed that men and boys are more open about nudity at the Y than anywhere else. At the other gyms, I've seen guys change in private stalls or using other means to cover their privates. Additionally, more of them shower with their suits on. But at the Y I've seen more males around the locker room completely nude.
  As far as I can tell, the Y still promotes that kind of openness more than any other place. But I always wish that I had been born early enough so I could have experienced it back during its "glory days" (as I like to call them).

  Years ago when I was a member of the Y it was not uncommon for us to walk around the locker rooms completely nude, in fact when I first joined there were swims for men and high-school boys nylon suits or no suits.  When the Y went co-ed the bathing suit policy changed and suits of any kind were required.  I was sorry because I thought my skinny-dipping days were over, but the bright side is that I found a local nudist club that I could join. There I found the benefits of being nude in the fresh air and sunshine. I now live in a clothing optional community
