Disagreeable Experience at the Gym Today

I was in the steam room -- nude -- naturally. Some guys came and went -- no big deal. Or so I thought.

I got reported before being nude in the steam room and on top of that, for being nude in the shower and not pulling the curtain closed.

I asked what was the problem with being nude in the steam room. I was told it was posted as one of the rules. I said, that must be new because it wasn't there before. I came out of the steam room, put on my swim short, which I had hung on a hook outside the steam room. I then read the rules. There's nothing in the rules about prohibiting nudity in the steam room and nothing about prohibiting nudity in the locker room in general. I was told I should only be nude when I was actually changing clothing.

I said, this is a men's locker room, there cannot possibly be any issue with being nude in a men's locker room. I was told it was indecent. I said, there's nothing indecent about my body and this is a men's locker room. I was told that people had complained about seeing me nude in the steam room and in the shower.

I said the proper response to such a complaint is to state that this is a men's locker room and one should expect to encounter male nudity in a men's locker room. And also that there is no rule prohibiting nudity in locker room and steam room.

I think I'm going to write a letter to the corporate office and express my concerns.

Genesis Health Club. Specifically the south club in Springfield MO.

Oh, I remember having a conversation with a male trainer. Don't know how the subject came up but I remember expressing my amazement that guys pulled the curtain closed when they took showers. I asked, what are they doing that they need that level of privacy while taking a shower in a men's locker room? I continued with, I'm guessing they're jerking off. Why else would they bother with the curtain?

The trainer looked aghast and said he'd be leaving the curtain open from then on and he would not be so concerned about covering up while in the locker room. Don't remember his name. Even so, he was an independent trainer; not an employee.

Anyone else have issues with Genesis Health Club? Is this a new thing? Never been a problem before.

It's a locker room with showers and a steam room; it's not merely a changing room.

And it's never been a problem before.

I'm not hoping to be noticed. I'm just totally comfortable being me without any sense of shame in that regard. And who would see me in a men's locker room other than men -- who all have the same equipment and have seen countless sets. Nudity should be a total non-issue in men's locker rooms just as it has been for all of recorded history.

OK, so locker rooms have not been around that long, but men have been comfortable with other men (clothed or unclothed) for all of recorded history. It's not as if I'm expecting something unusual.

Youre not really expecting a logical explanation, are you? There is none!

Most people have the most bizarre and irrational attitudes toward nudity.

And, apparently, some people who claim to be nudists. Referencing back to conversation in this thread.
Youre not really expecting a logical explanation, are you? There is none! Certainly for those of us who grew up with the locker room being a naked space, the signal switch, with the same environment now carrying a different meaning, it's kind of disorienting. Like getting a ticket for not stopping on green.

I honestly believe that if the founding fathers of this country could have foreseen this change, they would have listed nudity as an inalienable right. But nudity was a total non-issue and is still a non-issue in the UK. If Georgie had been going around having people arrested for nudity, they would have listed it in the bill of rights. It's my understanding that Spain has nudity listed among the inalienable rights in their constitution.
Its seems that even in a gender appropriated mens locker room social programming to feel disgust toward another man's nude body displayed is pretty strong now. Id like to change that myself, and I do strip completely without covering up whether anyones around or not. Your gym seems to have this consensus , odd and unreal as it is that men shouldnt be hanging out nude longer than it takes to put on fresh underpants. So consensus rules I guess . Thats a shame really, and a symptom of a sick society but thats old news. The steam room thing is such a joke tho! No where is it written ... then its ok to steam fully nude!!
Sounds like someone got their panties in a bunch. Ha! And your response about pulling the shower curtains tight to masturbate is spot on to accuse them of the "immorality" they associate with nudity. If they start throwing religion at you, I'm sure you'll have as good a response along the lines of nakedness being our original blessing. I feel sad for such people who must live with the shame and burden that no matter how hard they try, somehow, somewhere their epidermis is showing.

To me its quite simple. If you dont like being either seen naked or seeing other guys naked then dont go into a male changing room or sauna and steam rooms what is wrong with these people. Being naked is the most natural thing in the world And yes the establishment should have responded by saying its a male changing room where there will always be nudity.Get a grip .
Nudity is expected in a locker room nudism isnt. No one gets reported for changing clothes.
Are you saying that body shame is not only accepted in the locker room, but expected and respected?
Mensa wasnt reported because people seen him as a nudist, all people saw was an old dude acting creepy. Next time maybe he should hang a sign around his neck stating that hes a nudist.
Is being seen as a nudist okay or not? Your message is conflicted. What was creepy about Mensa's behavior? It sounds like he's been in that locker room for years without acting creepy or having others creeped out. Are you making his nudity responsible for others' discomfort? A nudism sign is not relevant since when being naked says it elegantly. I invite you to consider better supporting Mensa's view and to confront the real problem. It's not nudity, it's shame:
I'm just totally comfortable being me without any sense of shame in that regard. My understanding of this disagreeable experience is that you were being 100% naked with 100% comfort and 0% sexual behavior and 0% shame, and that confronted the complainer's judgments about himself and other men. The complainer is not comfortable being a man among men, naked or not, and is suffering as a result. By standing up to him and not letting him project his body shame on you makes you two good things: a warrior and a healer. Keep it up.

    thank you.

It's clear that [link]https://www.truenudists.com/user/BlgDudeMan/[/link]BlgDudeMan is not a nudist. Rather, he's an evangelist for body shame. Everything he posts is about how nudity is wrong and nudism is shameful. Check out his profile.

Only two bits of information about him: age and sex. Makes you wonder whether that's even correct.

And his posts proclaim that nudism is wrong, and that body shame is good. He doesn't understand why he's the only male nudist who is overwhelmed by body shame. It's simple; he's not a nudist.

And is certainly far more of an issue in the UK than a lot of Europe.

I think a big problem in the U.K. now is that the younger generations when at school werent made to have showers after sports and game sessions like we were back in the 60s and 70s the world is becoming to pc. We all saw each other naked every week as we grew and developed and seeing all different shapes and sizes of all our bodies made you realise we are all normal and that nudity is normal and nothing to be ashamed of and we were all comfortable with each other being naked..a great shame thats disappearing in lots of schools etc schools seem frightened of being sued for doing something wrong . the world seems hell bent of putting more issues in everyones lives that shouldnt be issues at all and its all detrimental to peoples well being I will always be naked in the changing rooms in and out of the communal showers :-)

I don't carry a towel around with me. When I went into the steam room, there was no one else there. Others came in, found me nude, didn't say anything to me about being nude, but complained about it to someone else. I've used those facilities for several years doing the exact same thing and it has never been a problem. There is no rule against nudity in the locker room or steam room.
Op, what did you do ? Stand there a bit ass to the locker, penis on display towards the room? Maybe your a bit large or got slightly erect. I find it hard to believe they hassled you if you did it like I said
Unfortunately, I must admit that I'm not "a bit large."

My most recent experience was at a community pool built in the 50's or 60's. Typical of the time, open locker room with benches and a shower room with a bank of heads along each wall. Most of us walked to and from the showers nude since there was no place to keep a towel dry. Little boys and girls were there to see grown men's naked bodies, and it did not seem to be a problem for any of us. Those who had kids with them also seemed to be engaged in conversation more than others, not only with their child or children, but with those of us who have had the same experiences. One one occasion a girl of about seven or eight years old was in the men's locker room alone, nobody bothered her and I heard no complaints from any of the men.

I go to gym center often. There was not any regulations about dressing in the shower room or sauna room. The shower rooms have no door nor curtains in the first 3 years. But since a few months ago, some of shower rooms have been equipped with curtains. I found not that many people care about this change. I don't like to use the shower room with curtain because the curtain may contaminate my body. In the sauna room, people are free to be nude or be with tower or swimming trunks.
You can invite more nudists to go there often and perhaps the unreasonable rule may be changed.
Mensa said curtains were introduced in his gyms shower rooms so dudes could have a wank in private. Maybe your gym has made similar changes for that reason. I cant believe that guys go to a gym to jerk off, but Mensa is a lot older and wiser than me so he has probably seen more of them.
That wasnt what Mensa said. Guys drawing the curtain say they could jerk off was his suggestion, not the actual official reason they were introduced. His words were Oh, I remember having a conversation with a male trainer.
Mensa is a respected member of the nudist community, are you saying he is full of BS? I did think the jerking off excuse was a bit lame at the time.
No I am certainly not saying he is full of BS. I am saying you misquoted him. I copied an extract from his original post where you can see that stated that the jerk office explanation was something he suggested in his conversation with the member of staff. Not something that was given by the establishment as their explanation for having the curtains.

Big Dude Man, I'm interested in learning more about what you believe and practice rather than your thoughts about others' motives and values. Please fill out your profile so we can get to know and understand you better. It would be nice to understand what settings other than men's locker rooms you feel more comfortable with nudity.
