Man, I hate those baggy, calf length shorts they call a swimsuit these days!!! How can anyone be so modest? I got some laughs at a water park for wearing a speedo but at least it doesn't pour water for an hour after I get out and keep me cold til it's dry! The smaller, the better for me. I'm not unfashionable usually, but can't get into this trend at all.

LifeHappensMay 8, 2010I must dissent from the whole here. If I must wear anything to the beach it will be board shorts for relaxation. I have yet to find a bikini/Speedo that fits comfortably. I have no issue with thongs, but in many places they are not allowed. Now, if I were competing again I would overcome the discomfort and wear the Speedo. I just enjoy the freedom of the board shorts.

gabareMay 22, 2010watching tv this afternoon and they had a program on about beaches and the topic was bathing suit and the ladies in their bikinis were talking about men bathing suits bikini/speedos or board shorts, needless to say a young guy in great shape walked by in a bikini/speedo and they all went ugh ! and said they didn't like it all hanging out on males and all seemed to prefer the board shorts, my wife also watching said idiots referring to the females. when we go to the beach or pool and i need to wear a bathing suit its always a bikini/speedo and even though i could lose some weight never wants me in board shorts. i still don't understand the double standard, when they say they don't like to see it all hanging out have they ever looked down at what they have hanging out. i apperciate the europeon outlook on the human body far more than us americans we have a lot of hangups.

I think americans do have alot of hangups with a human body. Hope that will change 1 day.ReactReply

utemanJun 5, 2010In Australia the implicit rule is boardies at the beach and stickers (speedos, dick stickers, budgie smuglers) at the pool... and preferably neither when you can!

CalifThJun 5, 2010I thought it was mostly a California or USA thing to wear those "board-shorts", but I guess they're popular all over. I think styles just change, but also, it's a stupid reaction to their crotch (and all the way down to their knees), from being seen. Part of it is anti-gay, I think. As for me, I don't really like the "speedo-type (brand name) bikini shorts for men. There's not much room for guys' parts. There are types of bikini swimsuits that do have more room, a pouch, that are more masculine. I like to wear running shorts, much shorter than board shorts, and still can be work on the Street. The thin material that they're made from feels and looks good too!

gabareJun 17, 2010a little off topic but i was watching a news show the other day and they were talking about men short getting shorter again, i don't get the shorts deal down to the ankle look or even to the knee, don't want them to my crotch but give me a break , females have a ton of selection from at the crotch down past the knee. people need to get over this gay thing with the speedos or bikini suits if thats the case all women wearing bikinis must be gay to, people especially us americans have way to many hangups.

Summer time is here, I was wearing my speedo at my local Y. Many girls think is gross, I looking at them, its ok for them to wear binkini but its not ok for me. Not fair at all. I have seem couple straight guys wearing their speedo with their girlfriend. so when guy wear speedo does not mean they are gay!. straight men do wear speedo or thong too.

Robert LittleJun 21, 2010I was on a swim team as a kid and have continued with swimming as my main form of exercise as an adult, so I've been wearing Speedos all my life. Love 'em. Can't imagine doing my workout in anything besides my tight briefs -- certainly not board shorts. I tried once and I felt like I was wearing a burka.
As for the beach, I basically don't go to textile beaches. Either I go where I can go nude or not at all.ReactReply - MEMemberJun 22, 2010
Speedos if I have to, I think I have a pair somewhere; can't remeber the last time I used them

westheathenJun 23, 2010I don't know which parts of Europe you folks are talking about, but in England Speedos are considered a definite no no. Admittedly I only do my swimming at a gym, but the vast majority wear shorts. It tends to be the East Europeans who go for the dreaded speedos.

speedo here.
At the lake at Indian Springs State Park outside Atlanta, I embarrased my son and his friend as i was the only guy wearing a speedo. Most people there were obese, so i figured the pasty white guy in the speedo probably still looked better than them in their cut-off jeans. Does everyone in Georgia smoke, or was it my un-lucky day. I did wrap myself in a towel when i was not in the water.ReactReply - GA
gabareJul 5, 2010florida-david i have been to several state parks in georgia and wore a speedo one i actually got a good response from other swimmers but at one i was wearing a gray almost white one that was a little transparent when i put my towel down and took off my shorts to sunbathe a lady nearby was so annoyed she went and brought back a park ranger to investigate needless to say he didn't even say anything to me but told her he saw nothing wrong with my bathing suit and left needless to say the beach was crowded with women in revealing bikinis and i know he would have a problem if he told me to cover up cause everyone would have to coverup, needless to say the lady left. as for smoking i don't see it much at beaches must have been a bad day.

DeanJul 6, 2010I used to wear speedos many years ago but the looks and comments I always got just wasn't worth it. So I wore shorts. I still have a decent length short to wear if I have to. But the only place I do any swimming anymore is on my land so the problem is solved! :)
I prefer Speedos!ReactReply - CA
caster1Jul 6, 2010I prefer a speedo but due to the stigma I rarely wear one on a public beach. I finally found some tight fitting sq leg suits that while they may look more like they're for the "gay" crowd, (sorry, not trying to stereotype) they are a nice alternative. Swimoutlet sold them online last season, but I didn't see a listing for them this year.
If I can't go nude they're my second option.
I do wear my speedo around the resort pools for tanning purposes though. They can get over it.ReactReply - LI

caster1Jul 6, 2010Just noting that almost anytime you see a gay festival type crowd a lot of the guys are in tight fitting high legged shorts. Don't believe me, do a search and look at the posted pictures.
Sorry, but that's what they look like and I've never see straight guys wear stuff like that in public. Just stating a fact.
For a swim suit they're fine though.ReactReply - WE

No underwear is allowed in the pool area only shorts/speedos and female one-pieces/bikinis. This may sound okay, but the only people who I have experienced trying to wear underwear (usually boxers) have been men. Bearing in mind that most pairs of Men's boxers cover more than most bikini bottoms. They leave the wearer's arse cheeks hanging out . Not that the staff get many complaints about the size of bikini bottoms.

LifeHappensJul 13, 2010I gotta ask...when it comes to undergarments, what do you prefer?
1. Commando
2. Briefs
3. BoxersYou should also state if you prefer speeds, board shorts, or normal swim trunks. I am interested in seeing the correlation.
ReactReply - WE
westheathenJul 15, 2010A similar comment can be made about the females who let it all hang out by wearing cropped tops; unfortunately it is more often than not the ones whose only work out is in a bar lifting weights, rather than doing crunch exercises.

I generally wear trunks (trunks as in the the form-fitting kind with just a tiny bit of leg). Regular swimmers are annoying as they always get air bubbles, or ride up into uncomfortable positions. Plus I used to swim a lot, and its a huge difference in how easy it is to swim with form-fitting trunks vs regular baggy swim shorts.
I have a regular bikini style speedo, but rarely wear it due to the reactions from some people. Trunks seem to be a good middle ground.
To answer LifeHappens' question above (correlation to underwear), I also wear trunks (option: not on the list. similar to boxer-briefs). Similar reasons, boxers bunch up and dont keep 'things' in control, but briefs are a bit too restrictive.ReactReply
